I was a tad young but would tag along w/ my sister and her friends when she'd allow it.
I remember the Wild Woodys - the Venture - there was an awesome video store where we'd rent Cheech and Chong movies. Let's see - Tippins, Arthur Treachers - Rustlers BBQ, Red Lobster, Fuddruckers.
Most of you grew up on the west side - this thread should wilt away before lunch time arrives. That's fine though - I'll reminisce by myself - :-) [Reply]
I grew up in the 80s so I was too young to cruise.
What do I remember about Noland Rd.? I remember Children's Palace. I remember Venture always advertising Nintendo games for sale that they didn't have in stock. I remember being traumatized by swimming lessons at the YMCA. I remember this weird store called Service Merchandise where you always had to take a ticket to the front to get your stuff.
Edit: I swear there was a YMCA near Noland and 35th, but I can't find it on a map. [Reply]

ha ha - I remember that - as well as the Underwriter's outlet on 24 and Noland.
When I first moved here in 1992 - there was a Service Merchandise near Gwinnett mall - as well. [Reply]

Service Merchandise was the shit. My uncle used to go in there all the time and find cool shit. [Reply]
Independence is my home town. I'm from Western Independence (Van Horn), we used to cruise 40 highway. Cool Crest, McDonalds (which is gone now) Texas Toms, Hi-Boys, etc. Noland Road was mostly kids from Truman and Chrisman HS. K-Mart is where Venture was at Noland and I-70. There was a Hi-Boy on Noland but was torn down when car dealerships expanded. [Reply]

well Blue Springs folks liked it too - The Cool Crest commercials are a tasty little morsel in my memory bank. For some reason their commercials are really sentimental - I can't find any on youtube - last time I checked, anyhow. [Reply]
Cruised it. From the car wash at 39th and Noland to the Food 4 Less parking lot at 40 Highway. Back and forth, rinse, repeat. Mostly in the early 90s. [Reply]

I lived in Independence until I was 12 or so (1992). When I go back, I am amazed at how crappy and run down the city is. Was it always like that or was I just too young to notice? Independence is kind of depressing now. [Reply]
