Nzoner's Game Room>Chiefs chasing history
RedinTexas 08:50 AM 07-19-2024
The Chiefs have been highly successful for a while now and are approaching some NFL records. Some are so obvious that we're all already aware (such as potentially winning a 3rd consecutive Super Bowl.) Others are less well known, so I thought we should have a thread to track some of these records we're chasing.

The Chiefs have won 7 consecutive postseason games and that is tied for 3rd all-time with the Browns, Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys, and Broncos. The Packers are 2nd with 9, and the Patriots are 1st with 10. Those streaks can be interrupted by a season or more in which the team did not make the playoffs.

The Chiefs uninterrupted 7 game winning streak in the postseason is tied for 1st all-time with the Browns, Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys, and Broncos. If the Chiefs win 1 playoff game this year, they will hold the record by themselves.

The Chiefs have made the playoffs 9 consecutive seasons and that is tied for 2nd all-time with the Colts and Cowboys. The second longest current streak is held by the Bills at 5. The record is held by the Patriots at 11.

The Chiefs have 6 consecutive seasons with at least 1 playoff win which is tied for 2nd all-time with the Cowboys and trails only the Patriots who did it 8 consecutive seasons.

The Chiefs have won the AFC West 8 consecutive times. No other AFC West team has won the division more than 5 consecutive times. The next best streak would be the Raiders who won the AFL/AFC West 9 times in 10 years. I believe the Chiefs are 2nd all-time in consecutive division titles to the Patriots who won the AFC East 11 consecutive times.

Please chip in with others.

If they win in 2024:

-The Chiefs would tie Pittsburgh for most number of super bowls in a 6 year span.

-Mahomes would be the youngest QB in NFL history to win 4 super bowls (Brady was a geezer when he won his 4th, Bradshaw was 31, Montana was 33) and would be the only QB to do so before turning 30.

-Andy Reid would be only the 2nd NFL coach to win 4 super bowls in a 6 year span

-Kelce would be the only tight end in NFL history to have played in and won 4 super bowls (Gronk is credited with winning SB 51 but he didn't play due to injury).

-Steve Spagnuolo would be the only defensive coordinator in NFL history with 5 rings (1 with the Giants, 4 with KC). Pretty sure he has the current record for this.

Here's some previous 3 peat talk, including the history of teams attempting to do so...

There is a difference between an interrupted streak and an uninterrupted streak. The Packers and Patriots both had an intervening season with no playoff appearance. Is that what you're referencing?

Really interesting discussion. If we win this year, and we should barring injuries, I think the team to compare us with is the Steelers in the 70s. That was a truly remarkable team with 10 Hall of Fame players.

For the 1976 Steelers when their streak was broken, not only did they have their two running backs injured (Harris and Blyer) but if I recall correctly, they had a substitute quarterback for most of the year as Bradshaw was injured. That was the team that kept winning because the defence did not allow any touchdowns in something like five games.

The other team that probably ranks into discussion of greatest ever is the Cowboys of the 90s. They would certainly have won 4 straight if owner Jerry Jones hadn’t been so jealous and got rid of coach Jimmy Johnson. Jones is probably one of the stupidest owners ever who got lucky when he hire Jimmy Johnson.

If we win this year, I think we are in the discussion with the Steelers and edge them out for the reasons pointed out in the post above. Then if we can get the 4 peat they can no longer be any discussion. But one step at a time.

They’d be the greatest team in NFL history and it would be a HUGE middle finger to the Patriots and Tom Brady.

Mahomes would be the first QB ever to win 4 rings before turning 30

I think if the Chiefs win this year, then we only need to win another within 3-4 years and to eliminate all argument. Winning this year and next year would definitely eliminate all argument and set a standard that may never be surpassed.

Our division is now as bad as the AFC East during the Brady era. Hot garbage.
