IT ****ING HAPPENED

OP UPDATE:

Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy!

It was really great game management from Andy that nobody will give him credit for because nobody ever does when he does something smart.

If we go out there and whip it around 3 times for a 3rd straight three and out then SD gets a FG to take the lead, things look a lot different going into halftime. That drive was enormous because it evened Pat's pulse a bit, IMO.
So I went to the play by play and found 5.

2nd drive of the game. Two incomplete passes to Watkins and Kelce. Ware for 4 yards.

Next drive wasn't a three and out but we had the 30 yard pass to Hill and then 2 incomplete passes and a sack.

Last drive of the 1st half went 6 plays.

Next three and out came right before the punt that the Chargers fumbled and we got the ball back.

And then the last two drives of the game were three and outs obviously.

That was a heck of a game yesterday, but it's about 60% of what Mahomes can be. Now at his best, a lot of that improvement will go to propping up the roster chaff we'll inevitably have to surround him with when he's making insane amounts of money and gobbling up our cap space, but for the next 3 years as he improves and doesn't cost much, it's gonna be a hell of a ride.
Yup!

Kudos to Reid for coaching him up for a season.

Dividends.

I. Don't. Care.

EVERYONE has drops. Every QB in the league has drops and most of them have a roughly equivalent amount. Some have a few more, some a few less but in the end they come out in the wash.

A 55% completion percentage isn't terribly good. And yes, some were dropped, but Hill also made a one handed catch while spinning around into double (triple?) coverage on an underthrown ball and landed on his damn head. That play had little to do with Mahomes. The 2 'completions' on shovel passes? That shit evens out.

He needs to get that completion% up a bit if for no other reason than to give the defense more of a blow. They were pretty damn gassed out there because Mahomes missed a couple balls that could've extended drives. Not a ton, mind you, but a couple. And as a general rule I'll take his aggressiveness over a 70% completion%.

But if he needs to take one or two fewer kamikazee strikes down the field to get that rate up to 60% or so, he probably should. That's kinda a bright red line to me - he needs to stay above that or he's not playing complementary football. It's exciting football, but he'd be doing a pretty major disservice to his defense. 70% means you're probably being a chickenshit. 50-55% means you're putting a lot of pressure on your defense and this defense ain't gonna stand up to that.

60ish% and a good YPA means you're pressing downfield when it's there, keeping defenses honest and keeping drives alive. And when he gets to be truly elite; peak Mahomes (he's nowhere near that yet), he may be able to challenge that 70% without a hiccup and without dialing down aggression. Right now he's not quite there (the throw to Kelce that he rifled for no real reason in the end zone being one of those examples). There's room to improve here and I am confident he will.

And yes, that 60% will be inclusive of drops because drops happen, gents. Just accept that and move along.
Great post and point. I think a lot of the incompletions came from lack of touch, or too much velocity. I count that up to nerves for now. He will get to know his teammates better and adjust accordingly.

If what we have heard about his self-evaluation/correction is true, we may see significant improvement in this area sooner rather than later.

I’m completely shocked Andy didn’t run screens yesterday bc they were there after Mahomes started throwing bombs.

They have a LB covering Tyreek in the middle with a safety covering deep. I was shocked Andy didn’t run this screen on to Tyreek.

I wonder if Andy used yesterday’s game to set up next week? Or is he ditching screens bc of Pat?

Well, when we're gonna have that as a line, theres context to it in these situations.

Especially when the drops weren't exactly by guys known to drop balls.

That line is inclusive of drops because it's relative.

There are pretty much zero effective quarterbacks in this league operating under 60% and they all have drops.

If you can't get over 60% WITH the drops included, you need to do something different. You need to improve your execution or change your style of play. I think Mahomes can do the former and I think he will.

But don't make excuses for that completion percentage. Even 'in context' it's not acceptable as a going matter.

Since he absolutely demolished me in fantasy yesterday, I'm gonna bring it up here.

First, I love Hunt. He's a really good RB.

But imagine having Kamara out there with this offense right now. Jesus, talk about speed.

Sure, I have no problem with that.

But when we're talking about a dropped ball by Kelce or one thru Watkins hands I'm not too awful upset about it at this point.

You guys have covered the points here about the short move the sticks game.

Yep. Kamara would be crazy in this offense.

Yeah, he's just unreal.

FWIW, in case anyone cares, I put up 125 points in a league this week and got absolutely demolished.

Love Hunt too but I wanted Kamara in the 2017 draft. Hunt is a nice consolation prize.

Seems to favor the left hash mark and prefers throwing to the left, which, from this amateur opinion, seems counter intuitive with him being a right-handed thrower. You’d think there is less body motion and more visibility for him throwing to the right side of the field.
