You can’t engage, you are now running forward making yourself a bigger target with each step closer.
Let’s look at it from the point of leaving. You see the threat, you get your group going the opposite direction. You do everything you can to protect yourself and them. Any training you receive that is worth a dime, will teach you protect yourself and your family. Everyone else is on their own, sounds harsh, but it’s the best way to protect yourself. You have no obligation to protect others in these moments, odds will favor things getting worse if you intervene. If you are not the target, you get out.
So you leave, now people who are ignorant say, “Where is the good guy with a gun?” You don’t intervene in one of the most dangerous situations possible, it confirms their bias, you intervene and it goes bad, confirms their bias. Also can put you in prison, or you have to live with a terrible tragedy that you brought on. With the amount of things that can go wrong, the risk is not worth it. The odds of you making it way worse is so much higher than improving things.
Some good thoughts here. There is no magical indicator that you are a good guy with a gun. If cops run up on you...you are a threat just like the real threats that are trying to be contained.
Situationally if someone pulls their weapon it needs to be because it absolutely has to be used.

That's what that one witness said so it's probably true. But I've seen pics of both guys who were detained by cops (the other is in a black stocking cap), and neither was missing a jaw. [Reply]

I have to admit that the people who said this story would go away once the media realized it was gangbangers, or at the very least heavily-armed hoodlums, kinda had a point.
I get that the police aren't releasing much info, but that doesn't stop the media from asking, or speculating, or doing think pieces on gang violence, etc. And they just seem incredibly incurious about any details right now.
If the media makes a stink, the police might be forced to release more info. Because I still have a ton of questions. How many more do we think were involved? What happened to the first guy who was shot as reported by several witnesses? Is he one of the suspects? Is he on life support? Do we have any idea why these kids were so heavily armed? Do we think it was rival gangs? Did one of them get his jaw shot off or not? Why had the police still not interviewed that guy who witnessed the whole thing and talked to Dana and Parks hours after the fact? Have they at least followed up with him now?
Nope instead we just get "3 suspects, 2 of them juveniles, this is still a very active investigation and we have no further details at this time" and the media is like "ok, time to go home." [Reply]

Juveniles being suspects changes everything about how much info gets released. I know you sort of mentioned that but that fact really governs most everything about the flow of info no matter what the media asks. [Reply]
