Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy! [Reply]

There is little financial consequence to offsetting Smith's 2018 pay into dead money for 2019 when he is off the team. If Smith is playing fabulous in 2018, even better for mahomes he can continue to absorb and not risk injury on a low paying rookie contract. He'll get 2-3 years to justify why he should get s 700% annual pay increase. Every moment he gets with Smith increases his odds. Whether Smith is the starter the whole year or if he gets dethroned somewhere in '18-19, this dude's future is better with Alex on it. **** This idea of trading for a third round pick, that's peanuts in the grand scheme of things
Andy's smart. He's tempering expectations on the kid.
But with that, this isn't hard to see how it's playing out. The can get out from under Smiths' deal next year easily, saving a lot of money and they just traded up for a QB in the first round. He's gonna sit this year. They aren't gonna play him, unless something crazy happens.
But he's not sitting two years. You don't trade up that far for a guy that you think needs to sit 2 years.
And Alex understands. It's business. Reid did it with Mcnabb in philly. If they can recoup some of the picks they gave up for Mahomes by dealing Smith, they'll do it. [Reply]

It would be Goddamned stupid to sit Mahomes two years and not get on the field. Half his rookie contract and still question marks of what he would bring to the game.

Tell me, what is this team saving money for in '18 that we wont have available to us? What positional need are we going to chase after that we can't or already have drafted? We traded away the first so that's not an issue in future cap. Paying Smith 12 and Mahomes 3 with future dead money at the position in the range of 8-10 is nothing with the cap expected to rise again. Most of our key positions are locked [Reply]
If it takes 2 years, thats not ideal with Smiths contract, but it could be made to work. You can't do 3. Then you have to start making contractual decisions on the kid without knowing what you've got. [Reply]

Looking ahead, you've got Peters coming due and some others are gonna need new deals.
You've got the ILB spot that could use upgrading, the opposite Corner, etc. Theres always spots that could use it. [Reply]

There is no waiting two years.
He either has it or he doesn't. Luck, Cam, RW, carr , cousins did it in two years. Worst case scenario he plays a third on a slightly expensive contact. Nbd. [Reply]

Definitely, but dorsey already planned for this with the dj and Tamba contracts dissipating. I bet this is Parker's last year as he's showing he is losing a step. Long term, it makes sense to keep Smith in the film room with mahomes for two years, not one.
The mcnabb scenario is different.. He had a guy waiting to play that was already a known product while Donovan was physically falling apart and he had just failed despite having an extremely talented offensive roster which included a top five all time WR in T.O. [Reply]

They're not paying Alex Smith 20 million in 2018 to show Mahomes things on film.

Fine, make him a coach.
Parker didn't lose a step. Sure, DJ and Tamba will likely be gone, but those deals are peanuts in what you can get from Smith being let go, to fill said positions.
And Mahomes will be a known to them after a year. This is basically the Mcnabb situation lining up, exactly. [Reply]

There's thirty million to recover between Bailey, dj, Tamba, colquitt iirc
As I said earlier... Spending 12-14 in 2018 and offsetting 6-8 onto 2019 when Smith is off the roster is extremely easy to accomplish. [Reply]

He's dead meat.
Someone linked an interview on a tv show Mahomes had and one of them asked him a scenario of a FB wide open for a 3-4 yard gain guaranteed or a receiver with half a step on the defender for a possible 30 yard gain and Mahomes answered that he would probably throw it deep to the receiver for the chance at 30.
We all know what Alex's answer would be. STAY THE FUCK AWAY ALEX. ENJOY YOUR LAST SEASON GETTING CARRIED AND FUCK OFF! [Reply]

All the more reason to play him his second year so we can see if he is what will blossom into being a top 10 draft pick worth. No need in wasting time. No need in holding him back or the team back. It's time to move on from Smith after this season. The team is and will be ready to move on to better things with Mahomes II taking all the snaps. [Reply]

-Dee Ford is going to need to be paid, and will get paid very well if/when he has another double-digit sack season.
-Peters will get the most $$ any CB has gotten bc he deserves it...(this is essentially QB money)
-No way we can get rid of Bennie Logan unless he has a really bad injury aka Jaye Howard.
-Chris Conley will need a new deal
-Morse will get paid handsomely
-Nelson should get paid soon.
Lot of contracts coming up in the next 1-2 years. [Reply]
