Nzoner's Game Room>The Fishing Thread
Easy 6 07:58 PM 02-19-2010
Searched around & only found the video fishing & BassMasters threads, i know their are plenty of outdoorsman here, so i figured it'd be cool to draw upon the Planets vast experience in all things fishing.

I only use spincast reels & fish mostly large/smallmouth bass & cats. My choice of reels is quite the source of derision from many people i know 'duffer gear', but i haul in my share of 6 pound bass & 10-20 pound cats on that gear no problem. With a little know-how you can use just about any technique you want to on 'duffer gear'.

Berkley Powerbaits are a big part of my trick bag, the difference between those & regular stuff is night & day. My best action last summer came on Mister Twister scented white curly tail grubs, on one day fishing from shore to a bridge pier, i caught smallies, bigmouths, perch & even 1 carp believe it or not... great day. But my bread & butter is a texas rigged Berkley worm, it'll wiggle through any kind of cover without getting hung up.

With cats i strictly bottom fish, no bobber & bait is just as basic... but its always in 2's to give'em a real treat... a shrimp/with a nightcrawler, liver/chunk of cheese etc. Cats are mostly for night sport to me, time to kick back a lil...

So thats me style, how do the rest of you guys get your fish on? What do you fish for, what do you use? IIRC Missouri's trout season just kicked off, anyone getting anything?

That's the what drives me out there time after time.

A fish with enough torque to pop the strongest lines.

I've lost that fish 3 times out here this year.
Many hook em. Fewer than you might think ever get one on dry land.
Having the drag strong enough to set the hook, and forgiving enough to not pop the line, is just the first hurdle. I jerk the shit out of it twice.
If the hook is not locked when he comes out for the freedom shake he's loose.
But, if it is, and the drag is locked when he dives, he swims away with some sweet facial jewelry.
I had one jump on me a few weeks back that could have swallowed a toddler.
It's actually torturous that they are in there and that I don't have one.
It's kinda like a Chiefs SB, too.
I mean, it should happen before I die, but that doesn't mean it will.

I'll be off fishing tomorrow at the California aqueduct, this will only be my third time fishing this year. Anybody have any luck this year? My uncle catches one every time we go, he has the magic touch. Here's a couple of pics from a few days ago.

We've been using anchovies and night crawlers, we are catching nothing but cat fish (except for that carp). Last year we was catching only stripers using the same bait. I'm going to trying liver tomorrow and see how that works.

Last night I mowed, got the kids to bed and snuck down to my pond the last half hour of daylight to see what the bass looked like. I stocked it just about 1 year ago, and have stuffed it with fat heads and golden shiners.

I pulled in 3 bass over 14" and they're all fat and hitting hard. Pulled in a 9" bluegill that was pretty impressive to me as well. I'm really happy with what I'm seeing and excited to see where this goes in 3-4 more years.

Just wish I had more time to fish.

Ok, to be fair, Carp is delicious if you have any clue about preparing and cooking fish. Scale it, score the meat every quarter inch or so, and deep fry it and it's incredible. Or, scale it, filet it, and brine and smoke it. I've been to a few places up in Minnesota that sell smoked carp and it's amazing, and I've scored and fried it, and you wouldn't know you weren't eating crappie except it's much larger.

:-) I treat people accordingly. Dude is a dip shit.

I caught some nice ones yesterday. Gonna post some pics as soon as my phone charges up.

Pulled in a peacock bass that was like 12-14 inches. Those things fight to the death. I thought I had a monster on there. They are thin like bluegill only bigger. Those skinny fish can put a fight.
Caught it on a buzz bait too. Crazy.

Pics will be up in a 1/2 hr or so.

OK......no.

And if so, it isn't that kind of carp.

Still, ugh.

I'll limit my consumption of shit eaters to Catfish. And only because they are Fn delicious.

Going out into the everglades this weekend. Will have one of my best shots at a 10+ pounder out there since it holds some of the biggest bass you'll ever see in large numbers.
So if an alligator doesn't eat me it'll be pretty sweet.

I've heard carp is good if you know how to prepare it but I've never messed with them. Far to many other tasty fish out there that I don't have to mess with all the bones.
