I had forgotten how spectacular he was at times for us.

That was the thing with Smith. It absolutely wasn't about talent. It was about aggressiveness. He was the overall #1 pick. Very talented.

Smith won a Heisman as a spread QB for Urban Meyer at Utah in 2005. The NFL hadn't accepted the spread as a viable NFL offense.

It wasn't until 2017, when Andy Reid unveiled a spread offense , that Smith finally had a system that resembled the offense that made him a college star. The KC offense lit the world on fire for six games and Smith led the NFL in passer rating.

The next season, Smith had the Redskins in position to go to the playoffs, but then had his horrific knee injury. We only had that one season in KC to see what he could do with a system that truly optimized his abilities.

Now, he's nowhere near Mahomes. But he as a better QB than he showed for most of his career. Of course, in 2017, he was surrounded by Ferrari talent. He had future HOF receiving targets in Tyreek and Travis Kelce, two bookend tackles, plus the NFL rushing leader in then rookie Kareem Hunt.

Give him the 2023 KC defense, and maybe you could win a Super Bowl. He'd be sort of like the Brock Purdy 49ers. Course, he wouldn't be the reason you won, but he could play point guard for a talented offense.

I'd rate him behind:

Mahomes
Dawson
Montana
Trent Green
Alex
Eh he had a Marty like way of finding ways not to lose games. A syndrome that plagues plenty of guys from Philip rivers to Herbert. Just finds ways to lose games he shouldnt when the lights get really bright. It’s the kind of game management style that wins you a lot of games but makes it hard to win the big ones.

But hell I get that we’re on a high of winning right now but I don’t know why that was a bad thing. It was like browns fans bitching about baker even though he won them their first playoff game in a million years. Even under Reid there are many many QBs who wouldn’t have gotten us that one playoff win we badly needed to reverse the curse

I'll say only this:

Alex Smith was better than DeBerg. That useless fuck gets more credit than he ever deserved. Total loser.

And the QB DeBerg was almost as bad.

I was always opposed to giving up draft picks for another team's cast off quarterback. Something the Chiefs were known for the years after 83. I never had anything personal against Alex; I remember a show where he and Aaron Rodgers did a skills test and it was clear who was the better passer. After seeing various videos where Tyreek was running wide open and Alex wouldn't throw the ball, I really soured on him.

You can't blame people for who they are and he was a good influence on Patrick.

Great human being and a QB that puts you in pergatory.

And broke the playoff curse/drought
