Patrick Mahomes was the Chiefs’ first-round draft pick last year, and like most first-round draft picks he had local businesses offering him endorsement deals. But he doesn’t want to be a star in commercials before he’s a star on the field.

Mahomes’ agent, Leigh Steinberg, told ESPN that the goal for Mahomes’ first year in Kansas City was just to establish himself as a part of the team, and not to get every endorsement dollar. As a result, Mahomes turned down offers that would have given him a higher profile, not wanting to create a perception that he saw himself as a star before he had proven himself.

“We talked about how the first year the goal was to integrate into the team, and the only way to do that is to pay deference to the incumbent veterans and try not to go into the situation with a high profile,” Steinberg said. “We intentionally didn’t do endorsements that would run in the Kansas City area even though they were offered. We didn’t want him to be on billboards and everything when he wasn’t even playing.”

As Alex Smith‘s backup last year, Mahomes says, earning respect in the locker room was a higher priority than earning money from sponsors.

“That just comes with the relationship you build with the guys off the field and on the field,” Mahomes said. “Whenever you have respect for each other and you know that you’re trying to make the team the best you can, and you know he’s trying to make the team win, you can talk to each other and say things to each other and you respect that. That comes with all of this offseason work, the weight room, the running. If you’re giving it your all every single day, people will respect you and respect whenever you say anything on the field.”

If Mahomes becomes the kind of player the Chiefs think he will, those endorsements will come.

Steinberg is a great agent.

With each passing day, I become more and more confident that he is going to reach that ceiling one day.

Mahomes was favorite QB coming out last year but I had no idea he’d be as good as everyone says he is.

Thank you.

I’m not sure what a hair stylist could do for that mop.

Favre was a ****ing idiot.

I am excited, and have hopes, with Mahomes, and expect that he will be a great deal smarter.

But boneheads don't win Super Bowls unless they are surrounded by superior talent.
I watched a lot of Favre during his career...Packers were in my local area (sort of). One thing about him...they were never out of a game even when he ****ed up. He didn't quit... I see that same trait in Mahomes...he had the very worst, dead last defense in college football. He was always playing from behind...that experience is going to payoff as a pro. With Smith, if KC got behind 10+ points, it wasn't very likely they were going to win.

I think your opinion on Favre is off...If KC gets a 3 time MVP, HOF, SB winning QB out of Mahomes...I dont think they would consider that being "****ed"

If you dont like him as a person, fine...but he was far from a shitty QB.

What I am telling you is that should Mahomes play like Favre, he will have the talent to get this team to the playoffs every year, and to command that big contract that eats u 20% of this team's cap space, which will make it extremely difficult for this team to build a defense that would be able to overcome the bonehead plays.

Brett Favre was overrated idiot.
:-)

An Iron man, MVP, SuperBowl MVP, All Pro, that retires holding every major passing record including wins- but yeah he is overrated. :-)

He fucked his team over year after year in the playoffs because of his retarded decisions. That's what you want to go through?

There is truth there...and I wasn't a Packer fan so those loses didn't matter to me. If Mahomes gets one SB victory..I dont think anyone would complain. It would be better than going out with a whimper like the Colts/Titans games. That was about as bad as it can get...

Favre was fun to watch...there hasn't been a QB like him since....from a strictly entertainment stance. He was a tough SOB...

Completely not true.

I guess if the game is on the line you would rather have a safe Alex play where he overlooks a wide open Hill and runs for the sideline instead of risking an INT.

If 2 or 3 of those jump balls Watson completed last year went the other way- would he be a bonehead for trying to make plays too?

How is it not true? And why are favre and Smith the only two options? There's a bunch of room on between and hopefully Mahomes is somewhere in between.

Never forget

And if you're not lying to yourself, that's a pass you can see Mahomes attempting.

And that is a legitimate concern. Mahomes is always willing to fight for extra yards or extend plays as long as possible, which means taking unnecessary hits.

I hope he is learning to protect himself. He played the game very hard in college, took some big time hits he could have avoided. Ended up with injuries that could be avoided as a result.
