The various movies obviously deserve their own threads once things actually start moving on them, but it seems like we should have a place just for general discussion about what they're planning. So here ya go. [Reply]
I dunno. If they do it right I think there's tons of potential. Dark as fuck to force the Avengers into fighting a variant of Tony Stark given he saved the world with the snap. Peter Parker especially. [Reply]
It seems like they're specifically calling him "Victor Von Doom". And for what it's worth, in the comics Doom rarely takes off his mask. So I see a way they could thread that needle.
(Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers)
Spoiler!
I also wonder if using Chris Evans as Human Torch was to prepare us a little to accept the same actor as multiple characters.
Huh. Apparently this is already a concept. Different universe Tony Stark learns to use magic to defeat his Thanos but it drives him mad and he becomes Doom. [Reply]

But you shouldn't reek of it.
Getting the Russo Bros back is just the right amount of desperate. This feels like begging on your knees crying to the point of it just being even more pathetic.
Hope I'm wrong and it is the right move, but this man is also just old as shit. [Reply]

Also as I think about it, there have been different interpretations, but usually under the mask Doom is horribly disfigured. If they don't show his origin they really could do it without ever showing Downey's face. [Reply]
You're not casting Downey Jr as the new big bad and not showing him every chance that's feasibly possible. Plenty of ways to get around him being 60 in action scenes but when it's time to throw out some exposition take the mask off. [Reply]

I should clarify that when I say not show his face, I mean show it unobscured by prosthetics and/or CG.
Then again, I think it might be cool to do a version of it where you only ever see his eyes through the mask. Kind of like Bane in TDKR. [Reply]

Yep. I’m no critic. This is a surprising move but it’s based on comic books. Comic books have an insane amount of variations and continuities. All that matters is whether its good or not. [Reply]

Doom has a mangled face and hence the mask, if they stay loyal to the comics. They should be able to pull off RDJ in that role relatively easy, and he certainly has the acting chops to make it work.
That said, I don't care for this. There is no shortage of actors out there that could have crushed playing Doom if given the chance, but that's my initial reaction and will probably warm to the idea. As you said, there IS precedent of Tony Stark becoming the Sorcerer Supreme in his universe, losing his mind, and becoming one of that universe's biggest bads.
Victor von Doom was trying to rescue his mother from eternal damnation and that's how he mastered his mystic abilities in the 616 universe to go along with being a brilliant mind with tech to rival Stark's. I wonder if this Doom will have a similar story - trying to bring his mother back after being murdered by Winter Soldier (leading to Mephisto???)? [Reply]
