You're right, the Royals' offense didn't do him any favors.
He had the league's fifth best ERA in 1996, but he went 9-13.
Through 1998, Appier had 80 career losses and in 35 of them, the Royals scored one or no runs.
Been awhile since I've revisited that truly disgusting stat. It's truly unbelievable. Ape had horrendous run support, year after year, after year, after year...
Went to one of those games in April of '97. Royals played Toronto and Clemens was on the bump for them. Rocket went 8 innings, no runs. Appier pitched 9 innings, gave up 1 run. Royals lost 1-0. Another favorite is from '93 when Ape pitched a 1 hitter against the Rangers, only hit was a wall scraper homer from Palmeiro. Royals lost 1-0.
He was kind of a lite beer version of Bert Blyleven, just trade out the Dutchman's curve for Appier's slider. If Appier never wrecks his shoulder in that fall, I truly think he would have had a legit shot at the HOF.
As for Rosado... Man, dude's arm blew apart and he was just fucking done after 4+ seasons. Another Royals pitching tragedy in a long list from that time to basically now...
