Nzoner's Game Room>*****The George Karlaftis Thread*****

More to come!

What are the #Chiefs getting in George Karlaftis?

Had an NFC Personnel executive tell me “He reminds me of J.J. Watt, when Watt was coming out. An explosive and versatile playmaker who has a high motor and can line up at 3,5, or 7. Very strong kid” #NFL #NFLDraft pic.twitter.com/5qM3g6OrMr

George Karlaftis was drafted with pick 30 of round 1 in the 2022 draft class. He scored a 9.23 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 116 out of 1503 DE from 1987 to 2022. https://t.co/iXXBvnoFJc #RAS #Chiefs pic.twitter.com/eZ9XjNRDUB

“I was sitting there the whole night hoping we’d be able to get you.”

Brilliant.

Looks like he’s going lighter. Apparently his 2019 film at a lighter weight was better. I think people would agree if they compared the the different years of his tape

#Chiefs rookie DE George Karlaftis says he's gone through some changes since his time at Purdue: "I lost about 10-15 pounds during the pre-draft process, worked a lot on my strength, mobility, speed. Just transitioned into becoming a pro."

Yeah, I think I mentioned that in here somewhere when someone said "he should get on an NFL strength program and add 10 lbs..."

No way - he absolutely looked his best in 2019 and playing at 260ish could REALLY make him dynamic. I think that is an excellent development.

I like what he did last year, don't get me wrong. But that would've left in in Tweener territory, IMO. He still wouldn't have been powerful enough to maul NFL tackles and he wouldn't have the bend required to finish some of these rushes off.

A little leaner shouldn't cost him functional strength but may give him just enough burst and agility to help significantly w/ his pass rush.

EDIT:

Yeah - here it is:

This is absolutely a good thing, IMO.

I agree

People think just bc someone weighs more they automatically win. Brown Jr had roughly 70 lbs on Myles Garrett and we all saw how that turned out.

The interesting thing is that Karlaftis is elite at 2 important things needed for pass rushers: his hands and lateral agility.

Dudes hands are huge. 10.25 is likely in the 97th percentile and you can see that helping him with power when he plays. He has short arms but his hands have helped him a lot against longer armed tackles skmply bc they can’t win that power game against his hands.

His 3 cone was 6.78 and that is…damn. That’s like 99th percentile for DE’s. To put that into perspective:

Justin Houston-6.95
Dee Ford-7.07
Frank Clark-7.08
Tamba Hali-7.28
Jared Allen-7.11

Karlaftis at 6.78 is insane. Especially at 266 lbs. if you’re under 7 seconds as a DL for the 3 cone that’s damn good. If you’re under 6.8 seconds that’s a damn anomaly. It’s elite athleticism, which I’m guessing they saw in him.

You see guys with elite lateral agility use it all the time. Von Miller and TJ Watt constantly use that speed to win. And Karlaftis has got it.

I really don’t give a shit if Karlaftis plays in the 250’s as long as he’s adding muscle and losing bad fat.

But take one picture of his pro day and you’ll see the guy shirtless running his 40…there is hardly any fat on the guy. Like he’s gotta be around 10% body fat

And there's your George Karlaftis #RAS. Ended up a little higher since his splits were good. Still never ran the cone, but didn't need to with this.

He scored a 9.18 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 120 out of 1455 DE from 1987 to 2022. https://t.co/iXXBvnoFJc #RAS pic.twitter.com/TcBWz2i0Uy
