3. So....if we know Dragons are the biggest threat to pretty much every kingdom in the world....how is every castle NOT guarded by a slew of Scorpion ballistas?
In a series so well written....the fact that Scorpions are nowhere to be found is some serious unspoken plot armor.
I seem to recall that In GOT times giant dragons were just as much historical myth as they were fact for large parts of the population. It doesn’t seem that unreasonable that it would take time to rediscover a defense for them once they finally actually show up.
And I can totally buy the idea that if you do post dragon defenses you are basically advertising you don’t support Targaryens or their allies and are happy to invite a fight. Probably not the best idea. [Reply]

Dorne definitely had them during Aegon the Conqueror’s lifetime. They killed one his sister’s dragons, Meraxes, with a scorpion, IIRC. There’s some badass art of the aftermath.
During the First Dornish War, the dragon Meraxes was killed when a very lucky shot from a scorpion bolt pierced the dragon's eye and went into her brain, killing Meraxes instantly mid-flight and presumably causing Rhaenys Targaryen to fall to her death pic.twitter.com/aRJB4KtWsI

The Dornish were actually super badass. They were the only kingdom who didn’t get conquered by Aegon and his sisters.
Yea, it really makes the Dornish sound even more badass, especially considering they never had to deal with a fucking dragon before Aegon came to Westeros (right? Lol). [Reply]
Setting up bastards and married off cousins to ride dragons. I assume this is the start of the dragons downfall. This could open up dragons with loyalty to their own houses. Is this where dragons start killing off all dragons until there are none left?
Also come on there has to be a wild dragon somewhere in the wild right? They came from the wild. Surely not every single wild dragon was tamed. I assume they stole a clutch of eggs to start. Surely the mothers of those dragons had more. [Reply]

They seem to be compacting the storyline a bit, but the source material featured wild dragons living on dragon stone. [Reply]
The "wtf where are the scorpions?" thing is an unfortunate side effect of "writers typically suck at scale & numbers" thing.
For Westerosis to plausibly forget a usable dragon countermeasure would need about another 100 years of history to elapse between Danaerys crossing the sea and the death of the last dragon in King's Landing. [Reply]

Someone mentioned that politically it would not look good to be ruled by the dragons blood and have scorpions on your walls. Likely they were taken down or dismantled to be used for something else. [Reply]
