I'm heading for Fairfax, SD on thursday to slay some Roosters. Hopefully I'll also get my young dogs into some Chickens, Partrig, Sharptails and Quail. If I could bag all those in a day that'd be a Royal Flush. I'd pay extra for that.

Anybody here bird hunt? While I was surfing the innerwebs for some pups I came across the http://www.wildlifemanagementtechnologies.com/. If it works it could change the plight of the Quail and the people who like to hunt them and run pointing dogs. If someone had a farm and wanted to play I might just buy a surrogator and and the birds for hunting rights along with the land owner.

What county are your tags for?

Me, my father, and uncle have tags in that god forsaken wasteland known as Shannon county.

I have heard it doesn't work as well as they claim....Or the birds just die off pretty quickly after being released. Word is the quail are rebounding slowly but surely. Either way they aren't ever going to be back like they were in the 90's.
If you want to buy a Surrogator I bet I could find a place to put it....

So glad rifle season is less than two weeks away....woooo.

Me and the father in law gonna get in the woods and do some scouting and final prep.

Any excuse to throw some camo on and get in the woods works for me.

Been seeing this monster buck that is probably in the 170 class range when I get home after dark. He is in my front yard eating acorns with a few does usually. The sonofagun is pretty much nocturnal though and I haven't seen him when I'm in my stands at all. I guess thats why he is so big. I've passed on a few little guys but will probably shoot the next doe that walks by to get some meat in the freezer. I love this time of year.

Not me but I was on the trip. HogFarmer would be proud or very disappointed, I'm not sure.

I've got a similar story. There's a monster buck on my father in law's land that we've tracked for a couple of years now. We've pretty much got his movements down but he is one elusive SOB. He seemingly disappears right around this time...shocking I know lol.

Shit is annoying haha. Last time we were scouting a couple of weeks ago we found a huge scrape in the area we usually see him in...encouraging.

Gotta love it though!

Next weekend I'm going phesant hunting, (instead of watching) and I'll be shooting lefty because of this fucking broken hand.
I'm borrowing a 20 Ga. over-under with a thumb safety, I usually use a 12 ga. SKB. Don't know if I'll do worth a crap or not but it's worth a try.

I was reading this years quail report for Kansas and according to the report North Central Kansas has something like a 35% increase in quail compared to last year. That's pretty incredible.

On the Surrogator I think your habitat has to be right so the chicks will be safe from the avian predetors and then you probably still need to go Coyote hunting and maybe Bob Cat hunting too. I am real interested in Surrogating some habitat to make a place to hunt quail that's not an overnight hunt. SE KS is little more then an hour from me. hmmm...

Saw a very nice buck last year just in bow range, but he saw me and bolted, I was about to shoot a doe. Father in law saw him in the same spot Friday morning. I scouted it out Saturday afternoon. Zero scrapes or rubs. Saturday night put up my climber for the morning. Walk in Sunday morning and right on the trail was a fresh new scrape. I was pissed since that meant he was probably already there and gone. These big boys only come out at night it seems.

That's good to hear bud. Just being out there with a gun in your hand is worth so much. If you hit a few birds... hey that's gravy...

I'm just dying to get out and hit some pheasant this year. I bet you I've cleaned my guns about a dozen times in the last month. I got the itch bad this year. Headed to Colby, KS for opening weekend. Then up home to Mankato the week after. I've heard some good reports so far this year.

Good luck and have fun.
