After the regular season was over I saw a 49er fan upset that they would have had better seeding if they hadn’t dropped that awful game against the Broncos. It made me kind of happy.

They were the #2 seed and won their last 10 games (after the KC beat down that is). Perhaps they would have vaulted over Philly had they beaten Denver, I don’t know. What I do know is the Denver loss had minimal impact on their season.

They would've been the 1 seed if they win that game. Makes a massive difference.

How many coaches that left the game and returned had a successful second run?

Dick Vermeil had a good run, but never won a Superbowl. Bill Parcells came back, made it to a Superbowl. Pete Carroll would probably be the most successful since he actually won a Superbowl. But there are plenty of others who weren't successful. Marty retired when he left the Chiefs. Still couldn't win in the playoffs after returning. And if course there's Gruden. He didn't do much before his little scandal. Sean Payton will likely end up with aGruden and Marty when it's all said and done

Carroll wasn't totally out of coaching though. He was coaching at USC.

True. But he was out of the NFL. Maybe it's splitting hairs, but the game changed quite a bit while he was at USC

Vermeil left coaching for 15 years and then came back and won a Super Bowl in his 3rd season back.

That's right. He won one at St Louis. I knew that. I guess that I was thinking about his time in KC.

In summary, I think it's all about knowing what to do and then doing what you know to do. If that doesn't work out, then find someone that knows what you're supposed to do, digest that and now you know what to do and just have to do what you know and others know that you have to do what is known by all watching you do what you need to do.

Or somesuch...
