How can it be overpaying if that's what he's worth? Brock Osweiller and Sam Bradford are overpaid, Von Miller earned his contract and he is just about to hit his prime.

Giving Von 70+million guaranteed was arguably overpaying the player based on him being able to dominate bad RTs in the playoffs.

Now that front seven loses Trevathan and Malik and has to pay Von 20m a year.
Again, the guaranteed money doesn't really matter in Von's situation because he was going to get the majority of that money anyways. Denver wasn't going to cut him within the first 3 years, just like KC won't be cutting Justin Houston. Von is a cornerstone player who will most likely see every dime of that $114M.

He just had a career year that is going to be damn near impossible to top. What the fuck do you mean "just about to".

:-)

DJs Nut summed it up well when he said (paraphrasing, apologies to DJ ) that miller's contract is a combination of market value and reward for the SB win that wouldn't have happened without him.

I would add the need to maintain cohesiveness in tightly knit D unit was a legit factor. Also fan base considerations and reputation in the eyes of futute FAs.

Too, the deal is structured so von counts around 1 million $ toward the 2016 cap, freeing up space to resign sanders.

It's a lot of $. We'll see how it all works out.

He only had 11 sacks before his run on bad RTs in the playoffs.

His effect goes beyond that, but he wasnt terribly productive in the regular season.

I agree with all of that. I'm not making fun of the contract, though I agree with the assessment their was no way for the Broncos to truly "win" in this situation. You have to pay the man though. That's clearly the lesser of too evils.

The prime of a players career is typically from ages 27-30. If a player can make it to that age healthy they'll still have their athletic gifts but they'll be much smarter/fundamentally sound than they were earlier in their career.

Von turned 27 this year.

Agreed. Elway did what he had to, salvaged what he could. I hope they can manage the cap hits. In the end if we suffer for it for a season or so it will have been worth it to me to have seen him knock newton's dick in the dirt and win a ring.

Yea, looking back on his career people will not look at 2015 as a "prime" year for Miller because he was 26, not 27. :-)

He led all 3-4 OLB's in pressures and forced fumbles last year

Von Miller hasn't been top 5 in sacks since 2012.

Are you saying he's not an elite edge rusher that showed up huge on the big stage?

You give Miller credit for getting a lot of pressures, but you say Dee Ford was a waste of a pick after he's only started 7-8 games and led the NFL in pressures in December.

Only JJ Watt has more sacks than Von since 2011 and JJ never has to drop into coverage.

Dee Ford doesn't finish when he gets to the QB.
