I don't know what Payton's interest level in the Denver job really is, but it's really gonna come down to what HE really wants.
1. Is he just interested in making a shit ton of money? Because, yeah, Denver could offer that.
2. Or is he more interested in going somewhere that he can make good money, have more resources to work with (see draft capital) and somewhere he can win right away?
Because he won't be competing for an AFC West title for a while if he goes to Denver. He may be "willing to work" with Russ, but the reality is he's locked into a shitty QB contract for the next 3 years if he goes there. 'Willing to work' to me, means he knows he doesn't have any other choice because of the contract.
And I do think Payton is a good coach (not a great one) that would make Denver better (say, compete for a WC spot), but in no universe is Payton and 34 year old QB with declining athletic skills beating Reid and Mahomes. I mean, maybe they get lucky once in 2-3 years and steal a game from them in Denver, but as far as competing for an AFC West Title? Forget about it.
So, again, just really about what Payton wants. Winning and legacy or just money. If it's just money, yeah, he might go to Denver.
But I still don't see it happening . . . . . . [Reply]

It's not a terrible roster. Problem is Wilson is not a good enough QB to compete in the AFC for a title. [Reply]

But they preferred Winston and Dalton. Which ended up being the right decision.
It has been stated over and over again that ownership is the key to Payton's choice. Denver's ownership has been the only one I've seen that is viewed as satisfactory by Payton.
Cowherd also mentions that the Texans have a chance to get one of the next great young QBs in the league, but quickly follows up with “but ownership is very, very crucial”. Sean Payton may not have had great things to say about the McNairs after their meeting. 😬 pic.twitter.com/sJX5wrmPZz

The idea that WalRuss wanted to go to the Saints indicates a mutual appreciation? [Reply]
