Payton made just under $10M annually with the Saints.
That's about what Kyle Shanahan makes now and is top 5, looks like only 3 coaches over the $11M bar - Carroll, Big Bill and McVay.
I don't care what the $ is, it doesn't count against the cap, go give Payton a 5 year $80M contract and let's party.
Payton would be a dream, but I could probably come up with 50 or so names I’d rather have than Hackett.
Brian Flores
Ejiro Evero
Byron Leftwich
Peyton Manning
Kellen Moore
Gary Kubiak
Martha Stewart

Sean Payton didn't leave the Saints for financial reasons.
He can literally wait and get the perfect job as opposed to being anchored to a declining overpaid QB and a roster that is more likely to get worse than better for the next couple of years. [Reply]

A coaching upgrade would help any team. That goes without saying.
What it comes down to is if you don't have a solid QB/HC combo, you've got nothing. Denver checks neither box. Coming into the year, both boxes should have been viewed as a question mark at best. It wasn't only rival fans pointing out Wilson's decline. And as for Hackett, what reason did anyone have to think that he could have more success than Carroll or any other decent coach?
And yet, here were Denver fans, chest-bumping after Wilson's contract was announced and predicting they'd be in the SB hunt for years. 80% of posters at the Huddle predicted 10-14 wins this season. :-) [Reply]

This isn't new news, though. Saints have his rights for 3 years whenever he decides to return to coaching. It's like Gruden back in the day. Tampa Bay had to shell out multiple firsts and seconds for him. [Reply]
It also tolls, so he can't just sit out 3 years then go wherever. Whoever wants him is more than likely going to be bent over a barrel by the Saints for draft compensation. [Reply]
Well, yeah, it's almost like not having your starters play any snaps in preseason is a terrible idea since their bodies can't get acclimated to full contact, especially with the reduction of full contact practices allowed by the CBA. [Reply]
