I had remodeled my previous home in 2008 and had white cabinets and they looked great. When I moved into my current villa in Florida in 2011 they had horrible looking natural maple I believe is what they called the finish. I added a backsplash, plantation shutters and the kitchen still looked like crap. I want to be awakened in the morning with something fresh and bright. Here's how it looked before.
I thought about painting, I contacted a painter and he would do the cabinets for $1,000 but I thought over time that might get worn looking. I decided to spend a little more money and have the cabinets refaced for $4,800. They removed all the doors and drawers and covered the base with white formica, then put on new doors and drawers and hardware. We replaced the white appliances since they were 7 years old with new LG stainless appliances from Best Buy and in August had wood floors installed and this is how it looks now. Since this photo I had replaced the sink and faucet as well.

She at least gave in on the counter tops, which we did with featherweight concrete.

We're at 5.5 years now, and the only issue I've run into is that it doesn't stick to 90-degree corners very well, so I've had to touch it up a few times with a black paint pen. Still, this whole project cost me about $400 (not including appliances obviously), so hard to complain after 5 years.
That reminds me to add our 10-in-1 (or something like that) machine, our vacuum sealer, and our vacuum marinating machine to the list. Very happy with all of them. [Reply]
I recently purchased a Sonos Move, and I am really digging the versatility and quality of the sound. It's pricey, but if you're obsessed with quality like I am, it's a no-brainer type of purchase for a portable speaker (wi-fi AND bluetooth to boot!). [Reply]
