And if they go for it, and they don't get it, the media would say that sources on the team said that McManus was hitting from 65 yards in warm-ups, and they would talk about how Hackett didn't trust his coaches or his kicker to win a game.

After 2 fumbles on the goal line, picking up a 4th & 5 was a crap shoot at best. Hell, the Denver ball carrier/receiver could have been fighting to get the 1st down and fumbled again.

Hindsight is always 20/20, especially when the outcome is negative.

And Andy Reid has 3 of the worst NFL playoff losses in NFL history. In those losses he made ridiculously bad play calls and displayed some of the worst time management decisions ever.

Is he a bad coach because of those decisions?

You play the odds and put the ball in your star players hands. If you don't get it, that still was the right call. What you don't do is attempt something that has only been done twice ever in a stadium that has never had a fg over 54 yards. That's dumb decision making

I'd be shocked if a single person would have criticized the decision to go for it.

No one would have, because it was the right thing to do

Funny...I didn't notice you citing the full season grades when the Broncos had 1 player on the entire roster at 80+. But one game vs rookie tackles is definitely meaningful. :-)

Btw, just about all the other starters are currently graded in the 40s-60s. Why couldn't they find snaps at those positions?

I'd actually have a decent amount of faith in Butker to nail that FG, even in that situation. But I'd still expect everybody to destroy Andy for the decision, even if it worked out.

Maybe you make that call if there are 5 seconds left on the clock, but "can't Hackett " burned off 30 seconds before trying it. I doubt it would have gone down the way it did if Andy were in that position

How naive. People literally get paid to criticize head coaches. As long as the outcome is negative, MMQBs pretending to be sports "journalists" will always criticize the losing head coach.

Yeah, sorry....it's really hard for me to envision a scenario in which anybody with credibility would have said "what a terrible decision to trust your near-$300 million QB to pick up 5 yards instead of kicking the 2nd-longest FG in NFL history."

But the decision making process was very much Fangio - like . :-)
