Okay, here is a place for the Golfers to talk about tournaments, clubs, swing help or thoughts.
Today is the Players Championship, which I think ought to be the 5th Major. Largest pot in the PGA. The daunting 17th, which seems to bring excitement every year. At least we will get to see Sergio blow up yet again.
Most people, myself included, have backswings that are too long. TBH, it's too hard to diagnose the problems in your swing with just that info. Have a pro check it out. [Reply]
Shot a 39 at Stone Creek (where U of I) plays today. Best 9 ever. Spent the weekend with my uncle who's a golf pro and he fixed my entire game. Hit 4 300+ yard drives/fairways and sunk two birdies (missed an eagle putt by an inch). Had a par shot until I doubled the 9th after hitting a massive drive that I pulled ever so slightly into the water. I'm pleased. [Reply]
I spent Wednesday - Saturday getting lessons from my uncle up in Glen Arbor and I couldn't put it together over there since none of the lessons were really on a driving range so I couldn't test out what he was saying and really getting a grasp of it.
Got back to Illinois, bought 110 balls at the range. Sliced the absolute fuck out of the first half.
Then I took a step back. He kept telling me I was getting ahead of the ball...he was dead right, I just couldn't figure out what he was meaning.
So I thought back to baseball...I watched the video, watched him swing...and I finally realized I wasn't extending my arms and it was causing my hands to be behind the ball which was causing me to stand up which was causing me to do all sorts of things wrong.
Started really extending my arms, my main swing thought...and suddenly I was just crushing the ball. The last 15 balls I hit 300+ dead straight...a few with a bit of a pull/hook.
Today...I had to hit one about 335 dead down the fairway on hole 2 (took a horrible lie on a sand trap rough where I had no shot...but it was the furthest I ever hit the ball)...
Par 5 I hit one about 330 that put me 170 from the pin and drilled it to within 10 feet.
This was the first time in my life that my driver was getting over 300. It was all due to me reverting back to baseball (I hit lefty) and just figuring out I needed to load up and extend my arms my uncle just couldn't quite find those words...really helped when I watched him and thought about what my baseball swing was back in the day.
I've spent a lot of time on my golf game this summer so my swing was good I just didn't have the right swing plane and swing thoughts...
gonna hit the range tomorrow at lunch and build on today...I've finally hit a breakthrough and am pretty thrilled. [Reply]
which is another thing my uncle suggested (trying lefty)...
but I've always golf righty which is super weird since I was a pretty good lefty in baseball and couldn't even fathom swinging a bat right handed. [Reply]
As someone who plays 50+ rounds every year with two herniated disks between L4/L5 and L5/S1, I can tell you that it's a day-to-day thing.
Based on what I saw Sunday, and what I've experienced out on the course - it looked like a nerve impingement. You try to stay loose, but subconsciously you start making a different swing to protect it, and that starts the muscle spasms.
Obviously my situation is different from Tiger's, but I've been in massive pain after a round to the point of barely being able to walk - and after some electronic stimulation, a massage and a trip to the inversion table I'm usually good within 24-36 hours.
Unless you play golf with a really bad back, you'd never understand how it comes and goes out of nowhere. [Reply]
So who is everybody picking in the PGA? Obv Rory and Adam Scott are on nearly every pundit's list. I guess I'll go with Keegan Bradley to win he's played well lately and has the length to win at that course, with Jimmy Walker as the dark horse. [Reply]
