The difference was our absent offensive line. We had no one able to block it didn't matter what scheme or anything they just over powered our offensive line it's that simple. We couldn't get shit done because we never could get a rhythm on offense because our offensive line was horrid that game especially with Fisher out we didn't have a chance.

Teams trying to repeat that recipe/gameplan are going to be disappointed by the results. For one thing, the Bucs talent in the front 6/7 is unique (best In the league, IMO, but certainly top 3-4). For another, the Chiefs were uniquely vulnerable that game. And finally, the Chiefs have drastically altered their personnel.

The biggest thing that changed between their meetings was that three offensive line positions were moved around between those games. That let Tampa pressure with its front four only, consistently and quickly.

LT changed (Fisher out, Remmers in)
RT changed (Remmers to LT, Wylie in)
RG changed (Wylie to RT, Stefan Wisniewski signed off the street and started)

The second biggest thing that changed was Mahomes’ turf toe.

The revamped offensive line will be a drastic improvement from what showed up in the Super Bowl, even with the new players.

Brown is roughly equivalent to a healthy Eric Fisher (though better in the run game and better suited to handle power rushing REs). But the Chiefs are better at literally every other spot than most of last season:

Thuney is one of the top 2-3 LGs in football, a massive upgrade from Allegretti (who was an average at best LG).

Creed Humphrey is a massive upgrade from Austin Reiter, who - despite the love PFF’s joke of an outfit gave him - is currently unsigned by any team. Humphrey also beat out Austin Blythe, who was better than Reiter and a solid starter for the Rams. Humphrey will offer much more juice in the run game and won’t get rag doll Bull rushed like Reiter consistently did.

Trey Smith is an upgrade from Austin Wylie, who is still on the roster. Much more power and a stronger anchor than any option the Chiefs had last year. Smith was also beating out Laurent Duvarney-Tardiff before he got injured.

Lucas Niang is an upgrade from Remmers, who actually was pretty good at RT a year ago. Niang isn’t healthy/primed Mitchell Schwartz, but that player wasn’t around even before Schwartz went out in week 6.

Yes, the Chiefs have 3 completely new NFL players in that unit. Yes, all 5 guys are new. But the talent upgrade is massive when the whole unit is examined. It may even take some time for the unit to fully gel, but early returns in that regard are excellent (Smith and Niang were smoothly passing things off in preseason action, even against “games.”)

Oh, and with the massive upgrade and investment in talent at the TE position from last year, I’d expect the Chiefs to have a much better counter for teams that play a light front and try to drop 7, with the safeties playing deep. Being able to line up credible 12 or 13 personnel will make a difference between the 20s, but it is especially helpful inside the red zone.

It’s also funny that you think “pressure with 4, run a 3 safety look, drop the safeties deep” is a novel concept for defending the Chiefs offense.

Gus Bradley has been taking that approach since 2018 with the Jags and Chargers. TJ 49ers did it in the Super Bowl. Etc.

What you’re failing to grasp is that the Chiefs attacked the offseason specifically to better insulate themselves against that type of defense.

Of course the Browns knew things they needed to improve. They did many of them. The secondary upgrades will help.

The Chiefs also clearly looked at what teams were trying to do to them and adjusted as a result.

The matchups are going to be different for teams trying to stop the Chiefs than they have been. That's the deal.

Fans of opposing teams and even some pundits, even good ones like Chris Simms, seem to think it's going to be same-old, same-old for Kansas City.

They, and everyone else knew exactly what they needed to do to catch and compete with KC. Had KC remained stagnant in the offseason then I would say teams closed the gap. Problem for other teams is that KC didn't remain stagnant and actively and aggressively addressed their biggest weakness which essentially cost them the SB. If you can't get pressure on Mahomes with four guys quickly he is going to torch your defense. The best chance of beating KC outside of injuries is to hope and outscore them. Belichick couldn't slow this offense down and no one else will either.

Don't forget in order to pull that off the KC Oline has to be decimated by injuries AND you need an elite Dline. Very few teams in the league have a Dline as good as TBs.

This last play in Bucks defence is 3 high and this is what Rams run. With some DB running forward to double up on pass coverage or take a running gap to halt run plays. The DB runs so he is hidden by dropping LB for QB read especially on ROPs. We are seeing this defence all season and I can't wait to see Reid's counter
