Nzoner's Game Room>LNBS: How do you get the Best OTs?
BossChief 03:21 AM 12-01-2024
We are all hoping that we get to see DJ Humphreys inject some juice to this OL. I think he will do exactly that and he will earn a new deal. Let’s get that out of the way.

This thread is to provide sone up to date data to discuss where the best OTs in the game were drafted. Some interesting stuff, for sure. I kinda thought I would go into this and see only high first rounders in the top 25…but that’s just not the case.

The way I posted them is for simple relevancy…
Overall NFL rank for all OTs on PFF (dodges wrenches) ….after their last name is the slot they were drafted. This is -generally speaking- the top half of the leagues OTs.

1) Mailata 233
2) Armstead 75
3) Sewell 7
4) Slater 13
5) Silverback 4
6) O’Neill 62
7) Tom 140
8) Johnson 4
9) Wirfs 13
10) Raimann 77
11) Cross 9
12) Darrisaw 23
13) Bolles 20
14) Johnson 6
15) Alt 5
16) Miller 15
17) Lucas undrafted
18) wright 10
19) Jones 168
20) Thomas 4
21 Tunsil 4
22) Decker 16
23) Jackson undrafted
24) Smith 9
25) Ekwonu 6
26) Moton 64
27) Matthews 6
28) Howard 23
29) Dawkins 63
30) McGlintchey 9
31) Moore 129
32) McKivitz 153

Some interesting things to note.

5 of the top 10 OTs were drafted at pick 62 or later.
15 of the top 32 were chosen at pick 20, or later.
12 were AFTER the first 60 picks.
7 of the top 20 were drafted at 62 or later.
Only 13 were top 10 picks.

No doubt Veach has scouts in Australia right now looking for the next Jordan Mailata. :-)

You have to hope that you draft the next Orlando Pace/Willie Roaf. Good luck.

The number 1 tackle on your list took 3 years to develop. This is why they shouldn’t give up on Kingsley

Two examples where Veach fleeced the Bills should never be used to show teams are willing to deal with Veach nor to illustrate that'd it be relatively cheap to jump from the bottom five to the top 15 in the 1st round, especially for a day-1 LT prospect that could guarantee the Chiefs being an absolute pain in the ass for another 8-10 years.

If it takes our 2025, and 2026 1st round picks and a random late round pick to get a LT, you wouldn't do it?

Another way to look at it is would you trade worthy and FAU and one of our 3-5th round picks for a LT? Or even less if it's a LT in the teens.
Bills cut a deal with us. I bet it will cost more

LT/Pass Rusher/ QB.

Yeah if it costs more than you want to pay, fine.

You can find depth and G's and LB's and CBs later or elsewhere.

If it were me I'd trade with the Browns who are in cap hell due to the Watson contract, and send them our 2025 1st and 3rd round picks and our 2026 1st, for #8 and take that Texas LT.

How/why did they cut us a deal? Same draft Houston moved from 25 to 12 with just two first round picks. And if it costs more then...still do it.

I agree.

The thing is that it's just too common for even the top LTs in a draft who supposedly have all the tools to initially struggle. It's quite possible even the guy we take high is going to suck a little bit. And I don't know if people are going to have patience.

Scratch that... I KNOW people aren't going to have patience.

At least at that point we'll know the fate of our 3peat venture, and success or fail, we'll be making moves that will do right by the team for the longterm and not the short term.

Best option, IMO, is a proven vet in FA, even if he's just average. I'd think we could find a couple decent guards out of the failed LT we have. trust coaching to coach um up. With our draft position every year being what it is, it's getting harder every year to win. We have to protect Pat no matter what it costs.

Don't give up on him, but you can't count on him, either. Not right now.

Best case is Humphries is average to above average and we can bring him back on a reasonable deal, and let Trey go. Easier to fill RG than LT.

Chiefs have the third highest paid RT in the league, sixth highest paid LG, and the highest paid center.

Meanwhile their starting LT for most of this season… Wanya Morris… is making less than their RB3, Perine.

The Chiefs have decided to invest heavily in other positions on the offensive line, and not LT… this is the result.
