IT ****ING HAPPENED

OP UPDATE:

Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy!

We were just snakebit that game, no other way to really look at it.

From Fisher tearing his Achilles on an inconsequential play in the AFCCG when the game was well over, to our staff deciding to shuffle around the entire OL and give them just two weeks to gel, to Britt mother****ing Reid, to the refs flagging Ward for staring at his man on a potential momentum swinging INT.

We just weren’t leaving that stadium with a win that day.

Already imagining him faking it to open up a running lane :-)

Multiple PI on balls in the stands. TB literally getting 0 penalty yards. The steer was in play. No way they were letting Brady lose that one. Reminded me of the AllStar officials against the Rams that one year

Come on man, we didn't lose that SB because of the refs. :-)

Universal agreement that it was Mahomes running for his life at the snap of the ball all game that did us in.

This gets overlooked when remembering the game and how they couldn't protect Mahomes and our receivers were playing without their hands. IIRC, we had 11 called penalties on us in the first half with 8 accepted for nearly 100 yards, while the Bucs had no calls until late in the game (again, IIRC). It definitely set the tone, even if we did shoot ourselves in the foot time and again.

Oh I know we didn't lose it because of the refs. I agree he was running for his life.

Nah, the refs didn't steal the game from us, but they certainly were a problem and deserve all the ridicule they get for that game.

And I don't know what's more of a crazy stat - Mahomes scrambling for more yards in that game avoiding pressure (497 yards, according to NextGen stats) than the Bengals leading rusher had for the entire season (Joe Mixon with 428 yards rushing), or that he did it with turf toe. Just absolutely insane.

Yeah, it can be multiple reasons... that game was a slugfest in the 1st quarter before the refs intervened. The Chiefs had an interception overturned by a bullshit penalty where instead the Bucs scored their 2nd TD, so instead of 14-3, it's at least 7-3 with another Chiefs' possession.

Chiefs scored a FG on their next drive, so it's not crazy to think it's 7-6 instead of 14-6... and then you have two more complete bullshit DPIs in the last 24 seconds of the first half to make it 21-6, so at worst call it 10-6 at halftime if not 7-6.

Chiefs score at the beginning of the 2nd half and it's either 9-7 or 10-9.... yeah, that makes a tiny difference from the Bucs going up 28-9 on the next drive, and then Mahomes throwing an interception because they're down 20, and so forth.

You obviously can't score 9 in a SB and expect to win, but whether it was sheer incompetence or whatever the fuck happened to cause those phantom penalties, they turned a smash-mouth first quarter of football into an absolute clown show. Of all games where the losing teams bitch about the refs, there was 100% a legitimate gripe about this one... it was all over national media the next day and even at halftime.

One thing with Steele probably being our goalline back is it likely to open up the opportunity for Pat to keep the ball more and run in TD's himself. Last year was the first season in his career that he didn't have a single rush td. The year before he had four and on average he gets three to four a year. Those easy run ins could make a big difference this year for sure.

Patrick Mahomes restructured his contract this offseason to help free up more than $21 million in cap space.

Since then, Travis Kelce got a raise while Chris Jones, Harrison Butker and Creed Humphrey have become the highest paid players at their positions in NFL history. pic.twitter.com/ojqppc3CfR
