In the 59 years before Mahomes KC won 8 playoff games.
Since Mahomes started we’ve won 8 playoff games.

Mahomes has definitely been the standout guy this year but it would surely give a fairer complexion if the award was called Player of the Year as it is for most sports outside of America.

By definition the QB is so far and away the most critical member of the 53 man roster that nobody can reasonably be considered more valuable but voters might reward outstanding play from any position instead if it was a player of the year award so that getting 18 sacks/12 interceptions/1800 receiving yards or rushing yards could be better weighed against 5000 passing yards and 35+ touchdown passes.

And if you want to win a SB, unless you find a unicorn(aka Brady), you are going to need a top 10 drafted QB and a even a top 10 QB isn't a guarantee..
No disagreement from me. I just wonder if a non QB ever wins it again and if so what would it take to achieve that feat.

I think they should have two separate categories, an MVP and a non-QB player of the year. Both would be interesting to me. If a non-QB can win MVP, that's great and they should be eligible. But the game today is all about the quarterback and we all know it.

Interestingly, here's the breakdown of MVP (Associated Press) by decade since the first award in 1957, broken down by QB versus non-QB

2010-2021 - 11 QB, 1 other (RB)
2000-2009 - 8 QB, 3 other (3 RBs). There was one tie, hence the total of 11.
1990-1999 - 7 QB, 4 other (4 RBs). Again, there was a tie one year.
1981-1989 - 7 QB, 3 other (1 LB, 1 RB, 1 K)
1971-1979 - 5 QB, 5 other (1 DT, 4 RBs)
1957-1969 - 8 QB, 5 other (5 RBs)

So it's a little new for quarterbacks to completely dominate the award, but they've always been a majority. And the only other position that has won more than once has been the running back position. So pretty much, unless you're a huge outlier, you have to handle the ball a lot to get the MVP award.

If we had both an MVP and a non-QB Player of the Year, it's going to be a ball handler, and in the modern era it'll probably go to a WR a majority of the time.

If only there was an OPOY and DPOY award in addition to the MVP . . . . . . . . . . oh, wait

I think he will, eventually. This year was/is his best shot, though. At least so far.

If the Bills don't get it done this year, they're going to have to hope to be in position next year and get a mid-year boost from a 100 percent healthy and recovered Von Miller.

Messing around with Over the Cap...

They CAN restructure the following deals and get to around $30M in cap space before the draft, but doing all of them to create flexibility in 23 would make 24 and 25 much harder.

Josh Allen (27, 23-28)
Stefon Diggs (30, 23-27)
Tr-Davious White (28, 23-25)
Dion Dawkins (29, 23-26)

Von Miller is a tough one. He is going to be 34 and is on the books through 2027, his age 38 season. So they COULD move some of that salary from 23 down the road. That would lock them into keeping him in 24 as the dead money would be higher than cap savings. They could get out in 25 for a $7M cap hit, after carrying him in 24 at $24M. They probably do that.

I think White is a tough call. He is very clearly not the same after his ACL tear. Maybe with more time he gets back closer to what he was. But pushing that one down the road for 23 is definitely risky.

Compound all this with the following:

Ed Oliver, Epenesa, and Gabriel Davis are all on the last year of their rookie deals. They have a 5th year option on Oliver that probably gets picked up, but that option doesn't exist for the other 2.

Tremaine Edmunds and Jordan Poyer (and Singletary) are all free agents. They likely want to keep at least Edmunds. Dane Jackson is, too, and is a RFA who will cost a bit to keep.

All said, the Bills CAN create room in 2023 if they want to go in again. And probably will. But with restructures on all the guys I mention here, you're freeing up about $43M. Save $10M for the rookie class, and you're at $33M with two key defensive stars up for FA (Poyer and Edmunds), a key CB (Dane Jackson) and some extension options (Oliver, Epenesa, and Gabe Davis).

Just not a lot of flexibility to go out and make a splash addition at that point.

Patrick Mahomes is 572 yards away from passing Kurt Warner for 10th all time in postseason passing yards. He has averaged 307.4/ypg in his career which leads the list.
