They were a thing is the 70s-80s I had a university president that still wore the damned things in the 2000s, with a short sleeve dress shirt, no less. When I was a kid, Dad wouldn't wear denim jeans and his "casual" attire was tan Sansabelts and brown wingtips. lol Standard IBM drone attire.
