This movie was never going to make as much as The Force Awakens. And Disney/Lucasfilm has acknowledged that. I just don't understand how this movie is a "failure" by any conceivable rubric. It was the highest grossing film of 2017. It wasn't eve going to make TFA numbers and it didn't. But it was a staggering success.
Without all the condescending remarks and down-talking, can someone please, in plane, simple language, explain to me why this is a "bomb"?
BVS made money as well.
A good chunk of fans think it's damaged the brand of Star Wars the same Way BVS did and are using the historic Drop off per week to justify said hate.
I'm hoping it did damage the Brand and after Solo bomb's they fire Rian from the new trilogy.
I don't want Rian Johnson near Star wars or any sci fi movie for that matter ever again. [Reply]
So fans are pissed because the movie didn't fulfill their fan-fiction and Disney/Lucasfilm should take that seriously and abandon all future projects? [Reply]

That's not why fans are pissed.
It's not one single reason.
for some it's a bad movie.
For me it tossed everything from TFA in the trash and made TFA pointless.
it also didn't leave me anything to look forward too in the 3rd movie.
It did the exact opposite of what the 2nd movie in a trilogy is suppose to do. [Reply]
I think it's a profoundly good movie that expands the Star Wars universe in interesting and bold ways.
Sucks that you didn't appreciate the movie.
But at the end of the day... it's one movie. And Rian's not doing the next one. So, it seems premature to walk away from this, if it's something you really love, given that JJ is back and it can go in a million different directions. [Reply]

It's a huge dropoff. Dramatic and huge.
Also, keep in mind, while Rogue One earned $1.056 billion at the box office, none of the stars were paid more than $500k for their performance and most were paid far, far less.

It was not, by any definition, a "staggering success". Fans hated it and it's dead in the water after 4 weeks. The director is being interviewed by anyone that will listen. The movie was convoluted, featured uninteresting subplots and shit on the original trilogy.

Rogue One, the first Star Wars film outside of the Skywalker saga, earned more than $1.05 billion dollars. Disney would have been happy with $700 million worldwide but it made more than a billion. Rightly so, Disney expected The Last Jedi to earn at least $1.6 billion and have legs.
It'll limp to $1.3 billion and while that's a nice number in a vacuum, it doesn't bode well for the future of the franchise, which now includes Solo and Episode IX.
This is not a good look for Lucasfilm, KK, RJ or Disney. They've turned off half the fan base, which will be skeptical about Solo and Episode IX (and whatever comes next). [Reply]

I get that you liked the movie. But it isn't a staggering success. It's a huge disappointment to Disney, and it's a dangerously underperforming film, because of how it might impact future films in the franchise. The "why" of it has been covered repeatedly in the thread, so I won't get into that again.
And, from what I've read, you're underestimating the budget. [Reply]

No, it did not, unless you think that a Force Ghost interacting in the corporeal world is bold or interesting or that a casino planet filled with arms dealers is bold and interesting or that Luke, Leia and Han's lives were filled with regret and sadness is bold and interesting.
This isn't the Star Wars trilogy that I and millions of others wanted to see.

Great! Just what everyone wanted! A Beat-For-Beat clone of the original film, a followup that trashed canon, killed off beloved characters without so much as a brief mention (um, Admiral Ackbar unceremoniously sucked into space!) and characters that have zero gravitas or likeability.
As I mentioned earlier, there's no way that in 30 years, people will be clamoring for the further adventures of Finn, Poe and Rey. [Reply]

I'm more worried about Rian's new trilogy than I am IX.
That being said TLJ left a'lot of fans with no hype what so ever and very little Speculation on IX. [Reply]

Cool. That's helpful. What have you read? What was the budget? I'd love to know. I'm just trying to figure out how this movie is the "bomb" that people around her are projecting. Given the real world numbers and staying away from anecdotal statements like "I don't know anyone who liked it" or "fans hated it." Because there are just as many examples of fans loving it as hating it. I've seen articles that state, mathematically, 75 to 90% of fans are in favor or reacted favorably to the film. So... all of that is just he said/she said bullshit. I just want to look at the numbers. And I can't figure out how 1.3 billion is a disappointment in any real world metric.
Beyond that... I guess I don't understand how the opposite of your post isn't true. Meaning, I get that you didn't like the movie but 1.3 billion is a success. Maybe we can argue about the word staggering. But how is 1.3 billion, the highest grossing film of 2017 and one of the 15 highest grossing films of all time not a success? How is that "dangerously under-performing?" Especially when no one at Disney expected it make 2 billion?
I'm really not trying to argue, I'm just trying to understand. There are people who are more connected and way smarter than me posting on the internet. I admit that. But this really feels like a smear campaign by butthurt fans who can't let go of the OT or their own personal expectations and wants for Luke fucking Skywalker.

Maybe you should write the next one. Will that make you happy, Dime? Or will you just hate it no matter what? [Reply]

I guess "hype" and "speculation" are what makes a movie good to me. If those are the things you're looking forward to then I can't help you. Expect to say that I think there is a lot we can still speculate about.
Ep 9 is wide open. That's really exciting to me. [Reply]

And there it is: YOU may not care about Luke's fate but millions of others didn't like it. Word of mouth killed this film's chances of even getting close to The Force Awakens box office draw.

Either you have a bunch of people on ignore or you just haven't read all of the posts in this thread because it's been clearly explained why people didn't care for this movie. [Reply]

Do you have a link showing before the release that they expected this to fall short of TFA? I personally expected the return of Luke Fucking Skywalker to boost it past TFA.. at least equal it. [Reply]
