I don't think I've ever seen someone who runs a 4.7, at best, be such a good scrambler for extra yards. Mahomes has drunken master scrambling down to an art form.
Two weeks in a row he's gotten away with runs he had no business making.
I suspect someday someone is going to absolutely clean his clock and cure him of stuff like this...but not anytime soon.
He looks like a basketball player when he cuts. I would love to watch this dude pull a Jordan and go be PG in the offseason in 5 years. He would at least be as good as Jason Kidd.
He's very quick in short burst, quicker than the likes of Russell Wilson & Deshaun Watson. That is based on their 20 yard shuttle times at the NFL Combine. His scrambling ability is very, very underrated. Here's a good list that shows how effective he is in this aspect of the game.

We've had so many QB's that would have either taken the sack or forced an incompletion on this play. To be fair, there's few (if any) QB's in the league that could have completed this pass or even had the guts to attempt it. [Reply]
I'd like to know what Gannon's 20 yard shuttle was. Mahomes seems to have that same kind of scrambling ability. It's quite different than what you see from Lamar or Vick. [Reply]

Gannons 20 yard shuttle was 4.11 seconds. Mahomes was 4.08
Lamar didn’t do the 20 yard shuttle at the combine but in high school he ran it at 4.44 seconds [Reply]

That's surprising for Lamar. Tyreek is a 4.06 in this 20 yard shuttle drill. Gives pretty good perspective on why Patrick is able to avoid pass rushers in such an easy manner.
That 4.8 in the 40 yard dash is sort of a secret weapon for him. Nobody expects him to be so quick in the short burst, scramble mode scenario. I feel like he's basically Fran Tarkenton with a stronger arm. [Reply]
Consider Kareem Hunt. He ran a 4.6 40 but had incredibly quick acceleration..which makes his playing speed much faster than what you normally see from a 4.6 40 RB. [Reply]
Mahomes gets the ball out so fast. The DB doesn't even have time to peek back, and by the time he does, the ball is already right above his head, perfectly thrown, as usual. [Reply]
Complete package. Mahomes has mo actual weakness. Arm strength, brains, leadership, pocket awareness, throw on the run both ways, scramble for yards, win a game with his arm, two minute drill. BALLS! HE IS THE MAN! [Reply]

No one does this. This is almost like a jump shooter cutting off a screen into open space to take a shot.
I was a bit surprised at this call by Reid at first as most right-handed QBs throw better rolling to their right. With Mahomes, though, it doesn't matter. He can throw just was well rolling left as rolling right. [Reply]
