I love it. MOAR Ridley doing period pieces.

Rothman noted that an epic tale of this scale has not been seen in years.

Indeed, the footage shown supports that notion. The moody scene takes place on a snowy battle field, as Napoleon led enemy troops onto a frozen lake, and then proceeds to rain cannon fire down as soldiers fall into the water, bodies and blood mixing.
Napoleon stands from a hilltop, watching his carnage unfold. (For those curious, Phoenix does not seem to be speaking in a French accent in the film.)

“Epic is the only proper description of that Apple Original Film,” Rothman said after showing the scene.

The film is said to be an “original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby.” Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Matthew Needham and Ludivine Sagnier round out the cast.

The greatest thing Napolean's army did was discover the Rosetta Stone. I'm sure it won't be part of this movie like all the others

But the guy's hit rate is pretty unparalleled. And I even thought movies like Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood were solid flicks.

He's routinely hits the mark on his sci-fi and historical fiction movies. Combine that with a REALLY compelling (and has been noted, underutilized) central character and this movie could/should be awesome.
I actually kinda liked GI Jane, don't think I've seen Exodus

It’s been a while but I remember the director’s cut of Kindom of Heaven actually being pretty good.

spectacular

He came from nothing. He conquered everything. From acclaimed director Ridley Scott, @NapoleonMovie is exclusively in movie theaters this Thanksgiving. Watch the official trailer now. pic.twitter.com/SG5HehRull

I've never seen all of Waterloo, but I remember it being one of those grand epic films that you don't see anymore. I found this on youtube, History Buffs:

I really like this guy's content.

Looking forward to seeing this. I like Pheonix a lot. Honestly, unless the writing sucks this should be a great one.

I hope his history here is better than his "history" in Kingdom of Heaven.

Phoenix is the one thing that might mess it up. Oh, and the possibility of forcing a love-story into it.

Phoenix occasionally lapses into playing Johnny Cash as some other character. And from this trailer he kinda has that gravelly growl and hangdog countenance to him. If it's Joaquim Phoenix as Johnny Cash as Napoleon, that would be quite a bummer.

DJ,

They are going to force a Napoleon/Josephine love story. It is one of the most famous historical love affairs.

I know. But it's famous because Napoleon's exploits OUTSIDE of it are famous. Stand-alone, it's just another tryst.

So don't let it become the central tenant of a biopic.

If it's a movie about Napoleon, make it about Napoleon. Don't make it about Napoleon's relationship...oh, and there was a revolution and a couple battles and stuff...

Scott's usually pretty good about not overdoing that sort of thing, but the trailer makes me wonder.

Yeah. While I love that movie, particularly the director's cut, I was disappointed to learn that it's about as accurate as Braveheart.

As for this, the trailer seemed a bit off. I kind of wonder if Phoenix is the right guy for this, but he's usually awesome in whatever he does. Seems like this would be more of a Tom Cruise role, but I guess he was busy.

If it gets good feedback I'll probably go see it.
