Nzoner's Game Room>Pro Bowl LT DJ Humphries Medically Cleared [signed by Chiefs]
SHOWTIME 09:18 AM 11-22-2024
Does Veach give him a call?

I predict @Chiefs. Makes too much sense https://t.co/hu5xdI5KF2

A multi-year deal would be a bad option for him, IMO. Because he's not going to get a strong multi-year deal with any meaningful guarantees at this point in the season.
Also why he isn't going to sign to be a contingency plan. If he signs in 2024 it'll be because he's getting a starting job. Same situation for Smith and Bahktari.

You know Veach isn't going to offer more than a deal for the rest of this year, so hopefully he'll bet on himself and try to cash in blocking for the best QB and HC on Earth.
Right.

If a multi-year deal were to show up now, it would've shown up in August. Anybody willing to offer him more than a make-good deal would've already been willing to do so just to let him rehab in their system and learn their playbook.

And he'd have been happy to take that because he'd have access to team facilities as part of his rehab process.

I don't think one was out there and if one ever was, it must've been a pretty lousy one. In which case, he's going to be better served finding someplace he can play meaningful snaps down the stretch to get himself back into FA on an upswing in 2025.

We're a nice fit for him if we're interested. I just question if we truly are.

Yup, which is why this would be the perfect situation. I don't think there are any other playoff contenders looking for a starting LT at this point, and we are his best chance to get paid next year.

This really just needs to happen. I simply have no faith going into the playoffs with Morris at LT. You're just asking for a disaster of epic proportions.

All three of them are going to have to earn their way into a lineup though. Maybe not Smith because of his history here.

But unless the team they last played for wants them back, any of those guys are going to have to sign onto a practice squad, spend a week (or two) proving they're in game-shape and then maybe they'll get a shot at a starting nod.

Teams aren't going to just sign a guy as a starter now absent catastrophic injury to an established guy. And if they're a non-contender, they may look to get a young guy those reps instead.

So your list of possibilities is pretty short. Maybe 12-14 teams that might make an in-season move for a veteran starter option. And with 2 other solid veteran SFAs out there, they could end up without a chair when the music stops.

If any of those guys wants to play this year, they'd better start listening to these practice squad opportunities. That's their path forward (again, returning to a previous team being the exception).

Cap space is a problem.. This guy probably won’t play on the cheap.. If this happens another restructuring will probably happen.. Although with 7 games left I would think the salary would be pro-rated…

At this point I don't think any of them do. Any contract they sign will be for relative peanuts and it's a pretty unlikely proposition to play themselves into a much bigger contract in 2025. So may as well sit on the couch and not risk injury, especially since all 3 aren't exactly bastions of health.

I would absolutely look at him if it means we don’t shell out a fuck ton of draft picks to move up for a LT ruining the teams future

We can't get crazy here. Every Superbowl we've won, or even been in for that matter, has had a different starter at LT.

Fisher, OBJ, and Smith were the LTS on the championship teams.

Who says you need continuity at the blind side?

They can easily create the kind of space it would take for a 7 game deal for a guy like this, that's not an obstacle at all if they really want him.

The only question is, do they?

Hell, if you give him a deal for the rest of the year and he balls out, you're either getting a high comp pick if he leaves, or you pay the bastard and have your LT spot filled for at least 3 years.

It really makes too much sense not to happen, I hope like hell they are all over this.

We won last year in spite of Donovan Smith. At times it was shaky. Either bring Donovan back or give Humphries/Bakhtiari a try. All 3 are better than Kingsley and Morris.
