IT ****ING HAPPENED

OP UPDATE:

Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy!

LOL
I realised that, so I deleted the question...

:-)

ETA: what's crazy is Mahomes has more TD's than five on that list :-)

LOL, Kaepernick is very high on the TD:INT ratio list. That's hilarious. Goes to show how much easier the game is for QB's now than it was in the older days.

I feel bad for defensive backs and coaches. The rules are setup now to where it's a heck of a lot harder on them to defend the passing game without getting penalized.

Now in terms of Mahomes, we are actually at a pretty interesting spot in his career. He has played 34 regular season games. 50% of it is what we'll call rookie Mahomes (Week 17 of 2017, plus all of 2018). We're seeing improvement in the later 50% portion of games.

First 17 games: 50 TD, 13 INT (3.85 TD:INT ratio)
Next 17 games: 35 TD, 5 INT (7.00 TD:INT ratio)

  • 10,310 total yards

If you take the average stats for Mahomes, he should hit 1500 attempts in roughly 7 games. If he keeps his TDs (roughly 2.5 per game) and Interceptions (roughly 0.6 per game) the same, he might have a TD to INT ratio of 4.64 which would be best in the league

41 Games
1500 Attempts
12.433 Total Yards
102 TDs
22 INTs

It's better to look at what he's been doing in 2019 and 2020 instead of 2017-2018. He's not throwing as many TD's, but he's throwing fewer INT's. He's not the same player he was in 2018. More experienced, smarter, and less aggressive than the earlier days.

2017-2018: 50 TD & 13 INT in 17 games
2019-2020: 35 TD & 5 INT in 17 games

So right at 2 TD per game and 0.3 INT per game lately. 7 more games would give him an extra 14 TD and 2 INT. That's 99 TD and 20 INT for the career. Close to 5:1 ratio by that point if things keep playing out in similar manner to the most recent 17 games.

So he's right on track to break the TD record too. :-)

He's at 34 games with 85 TDs.

So he should keep adding red at least up to game 40.

Let’s be honest, he’s going to keep adding and take over the entire list! That is... until he retires early after beating Tom’s Super Bowl record after only 10 seasons. I know we don’t want to think about getting short changed a few years on his career, but surely we can be content with only 7-8 Super Bowl rings?

That chart shows how incredible the young Marino was. He's held that 111-game TD record for 30+ years. Ridiculous considering how much easier the passing game was for guys in the 1990's, 2000's, and 2010's. The dude was way ahead of his time.

Games 41 and 46 may be challenges, but not based on his career pace.

Dan putting up 6 TDs in game 45 bought him some life...

He was.

But it's also worth noting that few teams bothered DEFENDING a guy like Marino either. There just weren't enough teams playing like that to bother building defense around addressing it.

It was a funny year. Neil Lomax threw for 4,600 yards.

Something strange happened that year though I can't identify what it might have been. Lomax obviously wasn't as good as Marino that year or anything but....he was Neil Lomax. And a scrub like Lynn Dickey threw for 4500 the year before.

I think there's something to be said for the fact that no, nobody was as proficient as Marino....and so defenses weren't geared around trying to stop guys like that either. That's how Dickey comes out for one year and scorches the earth. How Lomax is a monster for a year and then barely fringe/average for the rest of his career.

I think all people want to do is give Marino more credit and take credit away from Mahomes because 'more people are throwing the football now!' and that's not entirely wrong - but then again, a LOT more teams are geared around stopping the throw as well.

You drop Patrick Mahomes onto the 1984 Dolphins and he'd have absolutely done as well as Marino did.

Marino did it first but I take some umbrage with the idea that Marino did it better because of that. In some ways what he did was actually easier than what Mahomes is doing now, especially with the exotic coverages and disguised blitzes, etc... that teams are using.

Marino lived in an era when there were very few CBs who could hang with today's modern safeties. And their safeties would be nickel LBs today. They were more physical, sure - but they were a hell of a lot slower as well.
