Nzoner's Game Room>Veach trying to keep Trey Smith
RunKC 08:33 AM 02-25-2025
Have said many times that I feared this would happen

"Kansas City is making it a priority to try to keep Trey Smith.

... long term deal. Making every effort."@DMRussini https://t.co/webgjLp2Sq

Pretty evident he thinks their inability to run the football or trust it led the whole thing to unravel. It allows a defense like that to play to their strengths and they just pinned their ears back.

This also tracks with the logic of trying to keep Smith. If you want to be sure you can run the football deep into January next year, letting the best run blocker go doesn’t help the cause.

Could you retain Smith, Thuney back to LG, and sign the LT while also drafting a lead back to pair with healthier Pacheco and see where that takes you?

I think so. There is no LT available out there who can prevent what happened in the Super Bowl while passing almost exclusively. The run game has to be viable.

Just trying to think this through from Reid/Veach’s POV.
Andy is too prideful and needs to take a look in the mirror. Insane that he didn’t call a single running play until the 12 offensive play.

It’s like this part of Andy’s brain doesn’t compute. He needs to fix this badly.

Sure, but I'll cut him a little slack. He's been much better in previous seasons than he once was, they did a really nice job running the football for spurts of the LVII postseason and throughout the LVIII postseason.

Think they were just in a real bad spot at RB last year with no ability to bang off explosive runs. He and Veach's interviews yesterday give me confidence they sense the strong need to fix that problem with more RB options, and strengthening the trenches.

You've got the requisite receiving weapons to thrive especially if you bring back Hollywood. At that point, a nice ground game could be all they need to ensure Patrick is comfortable, protected, and thriving in MVP level form.

If they are trying to re-sign Smith, then they are going to get their LT in the draft. That's what Veach seemed to be suggesting a few days ago.

This. I have a hard time faulting Andy for not running the ball when everyone could see the ground game was ass this year.

He wasn’t even in the top 20 for pass block win rate for IOL. Sure run blocking was better, but we are a passing team. 20 million per for a bottom third pass blocker in a pass first offense is a bad decision IMO.

That was a problem of their own design. They went into the season with Pacheco, Steele, and Perine as their RB depth chart.

Pacheco getting hurt sucked. But disregard that and he's still got major flaws in his game and functions best as a rotation player in a RBBC, not the main bellcow

:-)

You are being absolutely ridiculous so far this offseason.

Nobody had an issue with Pacheco as the starter going into the season, and everybody loved the Perine pickup before the season. Revisionist history at it's finest.

We lose one fucking SB in 3 years and you are going to spend the entire offseason MMQBing last offseason.

Uhh, no. Feel free to go back and look at the discussion in the prior offseason threads. Plenty of folks had concerns that our RB room kind of sucked.

Interesting

He had the 2nd most pass blocking snaps of any guard in the NFL. Ofc the pressures are going to be higher. This is a bad way to measure it. It should be relative to the amount he has played. PFF’s EFF metric measures this. Trey Smith ranked 16th among 49 OGs in that metric https://t.co/LlCKl7PA5p

There's a huge difference between wanting to upgrade and pretending like you knew Pacheco was going to just fall off a cliff, but keep being a disingenuous bundle of sticks.

Who's the RB that you were pounding the table for that would've saved our season?

I'll wait...

Sorta like comparing total rushing yards amongst running backs.

I’d also add that the limited talent at running back made life harder for the OL. If you’re a DL facing the Chiefs, did you fear the running game at all?

I wouldn’t have. I bet those DL were intent on getting to the QB even if it meant being susceptible to the run. Dare the Chiefs running backs to make a play.
