Okay ... I can't stand it anymore.

I've been googling up stuff since I returned to the site.

Simultaneously, I've done various internet searches on the subject of "message board etiquette " and "discussion board phrases" and "bulletin board repost acronyms" and a thousand other damn things and I give up. I can't find the answer.

What the hell does "Q" stand for and why?

I gather it means a re-post ... I mean, any moron can figure that out eventually. But, why the letter "Q"?

It developed over time

It started with calling out reposted material by replying 'Repost.'

Then people started 'highlighting' reposts, by posting REPOST at the rate of one letter per post.

Then when people got wise to the game, they would try to thwart it with random letters

Then Q was settled on as the default REPOST interrupting letter.

Then then entire thing was distilled down to Q meaning someone noticed a repost.

Started with dudes saying "repost" when a dupe thread was made. Evolved into the first person posting "r", second "e", third "p", etc.. someone would post a "q" instead of "t" to fuck it all up.

And now we're left with just "Q" which means repost.

I thought that was subtle comedy brilliance. I wish that would have caught on.
