It's pretty much a given that the Royals will get a WC spot. The Royals would have to go on a bad losing stretch and the Red Sox and Tigers would have to go on a crazy winning stretch. All the Royals have to do is win 8 of their last 19 games and they win the 3rd wild card spot for sure. There is even a legit shot of the getting it with just 5 wins in their last 19. [Reply]
The other part of it is a lot of these AL contenders play each other. Minnesota's schedule isn't brutal but the last two weeks is tough, Cleveland, Boston & Baltimore.
Detroit and Baltimore still have to play against their entire season series. So if Detroit really gets that hot, it probably means Baltimore is taking on losses.
After this Yankees series coming up, the Royals finish their brutal stretch and then almost the entire rest of the season is interleague games against the NL, except the Tigers series. Kind of weird really when you look at it. [Reply]
