In my experience it seemed more like the late bloomer wanted to get with the "hot popular jock" that they didn't have a chance with whenever they were in school. I think it's more "fantasy"-based than predatory, I mean they're in school just as much if not more than the students, and it's quite possible they get sucked into that same high school culture and stigmas that kids do.
