Boomer Esiason: Patrick Mahomes

"Patrick Mahomes is the most explosive player in the NFL right now. He is playing in the midst of a circus that when it comes to town, everyone has to see it. He is clear and away the MVP of the NFL at the halfway point."

Phil Simms: Patrick Mahomes

"I thought Dan Marino was the best-throwing quarterback I'd ever seen. Then I saw Brett Favre and thought he might be better. Then Aaron Rodgers followed and I thought he might be better than Brett Favre. I know it's early in his career, but right now Patrick Mahomes is throwing the ball like I've never seen anyone throw the ball in NFL history. It's just incredible."

Bill Cowher: Patrick Mahomes

"He is orchestrating the most dynamic offense in the NFL right now and is in total command. His decision-making is impeccable."

Nate Burleson: Todd Gurley

"It's not just that he is great, he is the most versatile player in the NFL. And he will break LaDainian Tomlinson's single-season touchdown record."

Dan Fouts: Patrick Mahomes

"Patrick Mahomes is the most dynamic player in the NFL on the most entertaining offense in the league right now."

Bruce Arians: Patrick Mahomes

"He is breaking every record there is. I don't think the Chiefs are where they are as a team without him."

Trent Green: Patrick Mahomes

"The only other quarterbacks that have done what he's done earned the MVP, and they weren't 23. Yes, he has plenty of weapons, but he is finding those weapons and connecting. Part of being a leader is getting others to believe, and Patrick Mahomes has the entire Chiefs locker room believing."

Rich Gannon: Patrick Mahomes

"Not even close right now. What he's already accomplished through the first eight games of his career is astonishing."

James Lofton: Patrick Mahomes

"He is so good, you can't take your eyes off him."

Steve Beuerlein: Todd Gurley

"He is the best player on the best team."

Amy Trask: Patrick Mahomes

"Patrick Mahomes is playing tremendously, maximizing the (many) offensive weapons available to him (league-leading 36.3 PPG), limiting mistakes (26 TDs, 6 INTs) and, when needed, pulling a proverbial rabbit out of his hat and from a business standpoint (which I know is not a traditional factor), he is generating excitement and enthusiasm for the game (and not just among Chiefs fans) by generating offense, which is the both the desire and goal of many league executives and owners."

London Fletcher: Todd Gurley

"He's the most valuable player on the best team in the NFL."

If Mahomes keeps this up and Gurley gets the MVP....then Pat got fucking robbed. I’ll assume it’s because of the LA market versus the Kansas City market.

For the record - Gurley isn't even the MVP of the Rams.

When Gurley was just as talented as he is now 2 seasons ago but Goff sucked, so did Gurley. This EXACT player ran for 3.2 YPC. He was a below average NFL producer. Fisher did him no favors but Fisher did him no favors the year prior either and Gurley ran well then.

McVay absolutely makes a huge difference, but if Goff isn't out there being such a dangerous downfield passer (he really does throw an outstanding deep ball), the Rams couldn't spend pretty much every down in 11 personnel. By doing that, defenses constantly have to respect everywhere on the field because the 3 wide sets that McVay works almost exclusively from keeps them honest.

Put an average RB on the Rams and they aren't that much different. Put an average QB on the Rams and they're nowhere near as good as they are. Goff's ability to work the ball downfield makes that offense go.

Mahomes is more valuable if for no other reason than his position. Just the way it works, the guy has an influence on every single we play we run.

Someone arguing for Gurley may cite KC’s playmakers as a reason why Mahomes shouldn’t be, but not even that would not be fair. There aren’t many, if any QBs in the league who would have his numbers that he currently does. His skill set takes this set of weapons to their highest possible level.

And he's $10m cheaper than Gurley's salary. People don't think in those terms like they should.

Don't worry, he won't. Duplicate the 1st half into the 2nd and Gurley would be lucky to get 5% of the votes.

Yeah.

A QB isn't gonna win 13-14 games, throw for 5K yards and 50+ TDs and NOT win the MVP award.

It's an absolute mind-fuck that those are reasonably attainable number for a Chiefs quarterback.

Amy Trask?

Geez, why not ask Matt Millen? :-)

Since we're going with people who managed franchises into the dirt... Someone call Scott Pioli!

Beuerlein and Fletcher work some really well reasoned and insightful tales.

Mahomes is the biggest thing in Sports right now, not just the NFL- period.

He has a chance to tie or break more records this weekend.

If anything is unsustainable here, it's Gurley's td rate. He's not going to break Tomlinson's record.

Rushing TDs in the modern game can't be produced consistently enough to keep pace. That record is harder to break than any of the single season passing records.

I thought the record he's chasing is not just rushing, but receiving. TD's from scrimmage for a RB.
