This is not true.

Now let's look at QBs where they must function most effectively, INSIDE THE POCKET.

Patrick Mahomes

PFF Grade vs. zone concepts: 93.3 (1st)

PFF Grade vs. man concepts: 63.4 (25th)

Always some gray area when it comes to man/zone (there are plenty of hybrids), but this gets you in the ballpark

Hhhmm wonder why he's been so much more successful vs zone than man...

Why?

maybe because the man scenarios are probably bringing pressure and our line has been letting pressure get through?

I'm not saying that sarcastically. Gotta be a reason for such a large gap between zone and man 'grades' (not that I'm all familiar with what makes up the grades etc).

I would guess that man coverages tend to involve sending a little more pressure.

Though I would also expect that the scramble drills and plays out of the pocket are far more effective vs. man than they would be against a zone. A cover can only cover for so long.

Then again, most teams start to use more zone concepts later in games when their defenses are a little more tired. It seems like Mahomes settles in a bit as the game goes along so maybe the fact that teams are just a little less fresh and Mahomes is getting a little more comfortable in the 2nd half of most games means he's getting better looks and simply making better throws in those latter stages of games when teams are more likely to be in zone looks.

It's an interesting gap though, to be sure.

Idk if any team would really consistently play a 4-man pressure man coverage against KC. That doesn’t seem wise.

So my guess is that the discrepancy is due to blitzes.

i guess having 3 of his 4 picks all in that short middle area is really skewing that zone...

That's also the spot on the field where freakish arm strength can't really manifest itself as well.

It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't help you nearly as much as it does deeper and outside the hashes.

I suspect he'll always be 'averageish' in relation to the rest of the league when it comes to those short throws over the middle. He'll make his bones out wide and in that 18-22 yard range.

It's like running the ball over the center - how many guys are truly excellent at it? Or making layups and 3 ft puts. It's just a thing that most guys with any ability just do and at the NFL level, there's just not a lot of grounds for separation.

Mmmm, I get you now.

He's going to be racking up so many TDs on Pro throws that those gimmes are going to be neglected.

Whereas his predecessor, for instance, would abuse that zone to "great effect."

Not sure where Mahomes ranks outside the pocket, but I wouldn't take any of those over Mohomes on the rollout.
