Carson Palmer comes the closest, and that's more about management, similar to the Kirk Cousins affair. He wanted to get paid if he was going to be with that shitbag Cincinnati franchise longterm, and the Bengals said no to his demands.
In all cases where QBs leave teams due to disagreements, there's one issue at the root of it all:
Money.
That's it. ****ing money. That's all it takes. All teams and all cities are equal players when it comes to money and keeping franchise QBs. If the team wants a QB to stay and start longterm, all they need is a wad of cash, and the QB will usually stay there unless the team ****s it up.
Do you have any reason to believe whatsoever that the Chiefs are going to try to stiff Patrick Mahomes when it comes time for him to sign a new deal?
Perhaps a better question is whether he is willing to take a discount to win big. He will have that option available to him when the time comes and it could very well be with the Chiefs if he is that serious about winning. [Reply]

With the way QB salaries keep going through the roof in the last couple years, there is nothing to stop this scenario if a young/prime QB wants to help his team win.
Let's say a few years down the road, he is worth $40m per year. He could agree to $22m per year and give the team $18m to play with on the defensive side of the ball. $22m salary ain't chump change! That's still a shitload of money, lol [Reply]

I figure the best way to keep Mahomes happy is to peg his salary to the cap; structure his contract so that he gets a set percentage of the cap every year. That way, you are literally building the team around him.
I calculated it once, and if he was getting the same average percentage of the cap as some of the top tier QBs, he would be getting somewhere around 16-17% of the yearly cap. Over the course of a 15 year career, based on average percentage increases of the cap year over year, he could wind up making like $750M--and we would consider it a steal.
If he really wants to bet big on himself, he could take a somewhat lower salary so that the Chiefs could pay for more weapons. If he starts piling on the rings, he could more than offset that lower salary with endorsement deals. [Reply]
I won’t blame Patrick if he doesn’t take a discount, but I will say that him doing so wouldn’t surprise me nearly as much as any other QB not named Brady.

i will point out to the fact that he is so endearing to all the other players on the other side, not just the fans and his team mates. this kid is truly special off the field as he is on. it would be great to be able to project the future to secure that feeling 'he just signed a ten year extension with the kc chiefs on a team friendly, but richest contract ever' deal.
and in all honesty? do you think pat's dad would steer him towards midwestern life versus anywhere else, or would he endorse a move to houston in four years time when watson slowly fizzles :-)
