REDLANDS, Calif. – A former student who fathered a child with his onetime teacher will receive a $6 million settlement from a California school district.
Vince Finaldi, an attorney for the former Redlands high school student, announced the deal Friday.
Lawyers for the former student had sued, alleging that Redlands Unified School officials knew of his relationship with Laura Whitehurst and failed to warn his family.
Whitehurst gave birth in 2014 after a yearlong affair that began when the boy was 16. The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/2b5VKgI ) that she shares custody of the child with the former student, who's now 21.
Whitehurst, now 29, pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with three former students.
She served six months in jail and registered as a sex offender.

Right? He got paid $6 million to bone his teacher? WTF are the damages that equal that amount? What deterrent purpose would be served to warrant that amount of cash award? [Reply]

I could see them basing that on the care of the child he had with her. [Reply]

That makes the most sense. But even for Kalifornia that is a huge figure given they have joint custody, neither was a high wage earner or independently wealthy, and there is no basis for an elevated "style in which the child is accustomed" or whatever standard is used to determine child support in that state.
That would come to $333k/year tax free just for his share of the support. [Reply]
Yep. This is exactly why I teach my sons to be gentlemen and practice safe sex with a condom at all times and if they really need to blow one in a woman do it in her mouth or ass then watch them carefully so they don't try to manually transfer the load into their vagina. [Reply]

Yeah, the amount seems high but that was my best guess on why they would award the money in the first place. Unless maybe she gave him some sort of STD. [Reply]
