Nzoner's Game Room>Veach trying to keep Trey Smith
RunKC 08:33 AM 02-25-2025
Have said many times that I feared this would happen

"Kansas City is making it a priority to try to keep Trey Smith.

... long term deal. Making every effort."@DMRussini https://t.co/webgjLp2Sq

Guys.

Don't. Believe. What. Front. Office. Execs. Say. In. Public.

Maybe they're working really hard on Smith and he IS top priority. Maybe it's a backup plan for losing out on their top target in Free Agency or trade at a position like LT. Maybe it's all posturing.

Brett Veach has no incentive to tell the full truth about his plan for building the roster in February, before free agency opens, before the draft.

Yeah, Smith is a really good guard, but he IS susceptible to smaller, quicker DTs (undersized guys, DEs reducing inside) beating him with quickness and getting "under" him.

He's a fantastic enforcer and some of my favorite OL highlights of the past several years have been watching him absolutely PUNISH LEs for trying to spin inside on the RT, only to discover Trey Smith waiting to CLEAN. THEIR. CLOCK. I love it.

But his value is his value. Hopefully the Chiefs have a mark that works and stick to it.

It's also possible, if they're committing to him long-term, for KC to structure that so that the hits are small until Thuney is off the books. The team can handle this so many ways.

I don’t think Veach would say he’s speaking to Trey and working on a deal if he didn’t mean it. He would have egg on his face if he did that. I think it’s a priority.

What he said about the draft is 100% true bc everybody knows it. This is a defensive draft. WR isn’t strong, LT isn’t strong and the positions that are strong like RB can be had in the 3rd rd or later.

I think this offseason will be a lot like 2022. Spend your money on offensive vets (Hollywood, Trey, vet LT) and attack the strength of the draft to make that attainable by drafting defense.

DL is incredible this year. LB is really good and so is corner. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a pass rusher and LB with our first 2 picks.

LT is the big question mark and I think we’ll get our answer next month.

Am I remembering this wrong? Because I heard someone say this on a podcast recently too, but my recollection is we tried to sign Thuney and Williams. Thuney signed immediately and we were still in on Williams until he signed a day or two later.

That's my memory as well.

I think WE all presumed that was the end because we didn't have a ton of cap space even when the Thuney deal was reached (and I'm sure many suggested moving him to LT because that's CP).

But then the news followed that we were in on Williams and yeah, lost out on him at the very end.

Though there's a non-zero chance that Veach had an inkling that we were just being used as a leverage play. That's really information we don't have.

I don't know why this is news, of course he is going to try and keep Trey Smith.. or at the very least SAY he is going to try and keep him (although I believe him).

Veech has done the same with Reek, Jones, Sneed et al. He's never come out and said "welp, bye" to top free agent.

This might all be posturing and nothing means anything till FA actually opens, but I thought BV was being perfunctory.

What he said today can be true...

And it can mean he really IS their top priority and they won't be beat on him.

Or it could mean they are engaged with his agent and have a fair deal that is their top-end.

Or it could mean they are engaged with his agent and already know what they want exceeds KC's top-end.

But it shouldn't inspire doom-and-gloom that they're going to do something stupid.

He would if he thinks there's leverage to be gained anywhere.

Hell fellas, it may not have anything to do with Smith at all. Maybe it's a shot across Bolton's bow.

He's out there saying "I need $17 million or I'm going to Free Agency" and Veach is saying "Okay -- well I'm spending that on Smith so let's get this done at $13 or it's been fun..."

May be nothing more than a bluff to get Bolton's people to the table.

Or like I said earlier, maybe it's an angle for a tag and trade.

There are a number of reasons he might do it. I don't think "egg on his face" really means a damn thing to him.

I just don't think Smith can possibly be a priority right now. I think Veach is smarter than that.

What's your beef with a day 3 rookie that looked pretty damn good week 18 against starters?

Yes and no. It just depends on how the deal is structured.

Not really.

Push money down the road if you want and there's still enormous opportunity cost there.

I'd rather have that money freed up for extensions for McDuffie and Karlaftis. Or Watson. Or Bolton. An upgrade on Danna long-term. A ball-hawking FS should a guy like Bates become available.

Or pretty much ANY other position on the football field other than the RG who is just an above average pass protector. Evidently the RB was the reason we couldn't run the ball -- give his money to a damn RB for all I care.

There's really no position apart from special teams that I'm LESS interested in spending at the top of the market on than a run-first RG.

There really isn't a single argument I can find that gets me anywhere close to on board with this.

I think you’re gonna see them attack these positions in the draft.

If they are going to have a lot of free space after this season...spend that future money on Myles Garrett. Pay that big money for a bona fide superstar...not above average players.
