Saccopoo Memorial Draft Forum>How do we move the money around this offseason?
ntexascardfan 11:48 AM 02-12-2025
With our draft pool, we functionally have 0 dollars in cap space if I understand correctly.

I see our best pools of money as the following:

Restructure Mahomes (freed up 21.6 last year)
Kelce retires (17 million in savings)
Extend Thuney (what would a contract look like)
Extend Taylor (what would a contract look like)

Do we want to try to make it through a season without restructuring Mahomes? My assumption is if we want to treat next season like a mini re-build we should try avoiding pushing more of his contract into future years and bite the bullet.

Is there a world where if Kelce retires and we extend Thuney and Taylor that we can free up enough cash to do the work we need this off-season or is a Mahomes restructure going to be critical for any moves we need to make?

Extending Thuney is the obvious one for me, as is dipping into the bank of Mahomes.

I would not be extending Taylor, he would be on my cut list for the following year so not touching that contract.

I have not had a look at Chris Jones's contract, assumed something could be pushed there instead of Mahomes if it was advantageous to do so.

I saw a tweet somewhere that talked about how the Eagles structured all of the star players with minimal cap hits and kicked the can down the road on everyone, and it paid off.

Unsure who we would replicate that with on our roster if we went the same route... probably McDuffie, restructure Creed....?

I've been vocal about being iffy on extending Thuney but if we let Trey walk we almost have too. You probably don't want to find a LT,LG and RG in an off-season. As for extending Taylor, fuck that. Let him play, let him walk, collect the comp pick and play wanya or Kingsley there. He's been good mostly but his penalties are killer when an offense isn't clicking.

I think a Mahomes restructure (can get up to 48.5m there), Kelce retiring (17m there), and extending Thuney for a year (can probably gain 6m-ish there), are the primary options. You could restructure Tranquill (about 2.5m there) or Danna (about 2.5m there). Other than that, a couple cuts or trades that could net 1.5m like Skyy Moore etc. Nothing big.

Chiefs don’t play the post June 1 void year game like the Eagles. More teams are starting to use these tricks, but not sure why Veach doesn’t? Worried about the inevitable rule changes and being left holding the bag?

Because the bill always comes due. It's not the best tactic in the world to keep pushing money down the line. At some point, you're going to eat it.

Post-June 1 cuts make sense at times but teams don't "normally" employ the tactic. You eat this year's dead money now but all the other dead money you'd eat now just hits next year instead. Gotta pay the piper one way or another.

These void years everyone is claiming are so great... They accelerate against the cap too, just like on a June 1 cut. The only way they don't accelerate is if that player signs a new contract with the team.

Take a guess what the Eagles are going to eat on dead money from voids in 2025? $30.7m. Add that to the $29.1m they already have on the books as dead money from past contracts. They'll have over $28m in 2026 as well.

Overthecap claims the 2026 hit would be around 90 million if not for the way Philly plays void years. Sure it gets moved down the road but that just keeps happening in perpetuity. Money/draft picks are more valuable this year than they are next year.

That's completely ass-backward. They are pushing money they'd pay now to future years so instead of having 90m hit in 2024 they have parts of it hit in 2025 and 2026. It does well for buying a guy right now but it hurts later in retaining guys or buying another guy.

How does murder hit the cap?

I feel compelled to murder Taylor.

Would that help?

Would be interested in which FAs people think we should prioritise outside of our own. A few that I'd like us to explore, or I'd be intrigued by as options.

DE - I'd like to see what Chase Young wants ahead of bringing Omenihu back. Would also be interested in what Malcolm Koonce fetches.

DT - Teair Tart and Poona Ford are two I'd be interested in occupying different roles. If Turk wants a proper pay rise I'd move on. I think there are better run-stuffers, better pass-rushers, and a few guys better at both.

CB - Most likely we draft or ride out what we have and hope nobody is injured. But I don't think it's impossible we look at a vet to provide experience on the outside and allow McDuffie back in the slot. Mike Hilton had a pretty good year, almost certainly wants too much at his age. I guess Charvarius Ward is possible, if he hasn't dropped off a cliff.

WR - Hollywood is probably the most realistic returner, but a guy like Dyami Brown had a solid season and looks like a very reasonable WR3 or 4. Most likely he returns to the Commanders.

LB - I like Crow's idea of Sherwood. There's old man Wagner. Greenlaw off an injury. I also wonder what Baun fetches, because he was bang-average before the Eagles and then outstanding.

Baun feels a bit like fools gold to me. He'll 29 this upcoming season and was playing for a contract while he was surrounded by one of the best defenses in the league.

Maybe he continues his elite production, but it's a gamble.

RB - Ty Johnson (BUF) would be a nice 3rd down back, Rico Dowdle (DAL) would be a nice starter here IMO, Javonte Williams (DEN) also a nice 3rd down back.
WR - Elijah Moore (CLE) would be great if we don't bring back Hollywood. Rondale Moore (ATL) is a productive slot but small. So is Tutu Atwell (LAR). I really like Josh Palmer (LAC) as a guy, depends what he's looking for but probably an opportunity to start full time. Like Darius Slayton (NYG) too but he'll want to be a starter.
TE - If Kelce retires, I wouldn't mind kicking the tires on Mike Gesicki (CIN)
DT - I think there are some budget guys I like in Benito Jones (MIA) and Roy Lopez (ARI). I like Bobby Brown III (LAR), Javon Kinlaw (NYJ) and BJ Hill (CIN).
DE - Chase Young (NO) is appealing. I like Josh Sweat (PHI) alot. Also like Patrick Jones II (MIN). On the cheaper end, like Chauncey Golston (DAL). I'd kick the tires on Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (TB) and see if he's worthwhile from a character/effort perspective.
LB - Love the idea of getting more athletic there so I really like Jamien Sherwood (NYJ). I also like Dre Greenlaw (SF). Wouldn't mind Tyrel Dodson (MIA). Ernest Jones (SEA) is a dude too.
S - Would love Jevon Holland (MIA) but he's gonna be $$$. Camryn Bynum (MIN) is also a stud. Don't see us getting those types. Richie Grant (ATL) was a 3 year start, lost his job this year. NOt great in coverage but I think he can be a guy you bring in as a reserve. His coverage isn't any worse than Reid's IMO and certainly you see alot of similar guys in FA like Cisco, Blackmon, that are starters.
CB - I really like Paulson Adebo (NO). Would love Byron Murphy (MIN) in the slot. That said, I don't see us playing this market but if we do, I'd look at reclamation projects like Eric Stokes (GB) or Jeff Okudah (HOU).

Glad someone else likes Sweat. I think Blackmon is a solid S. Almost mentioned Dodson because he offers much more in coverage, just not great against the run, I wouldn't hate that.

If we come out bolstering LT with even a stop-gap vet, and improving the quality and depth on the DL I think that's a win. Even I'd we take minor steps back at LB and safety, and really, we may not with guys like Sherwood.
