Looks like Discovery on steroids. Hard pass.

I watched a few episodes and anytime the focus was on the one with the schoolmarm hair and the wrinkly nose, it was just awful.

But those were mostly early seasons so maybe I oughta circle back and give it a shot one of these days.

Do I HAVE to slog through the first four seasons or I can I just pick it up in S4. Because I did like Sisko but most of the time he seemed wasted on a show that was just kinda meandering.

It's the first three seasons that are sort of lame, although overall they're much better than the first two mostly lame seasons of Next Generation. But like NG, there are a few gems in there.

I think a good rule would be to check the IMDb ratings. Any episode with a rating higher than 7.0 is probably worth a look, and anything lower than that probably isn't. Definitely watch anything that talks about the Dominium in the description, since they become the big baddie later on.

Starting with season 4, Worf joins the crew and DS9 starts to focus on the Dominium War, which also includes conflict with the Klingons. Gowron, my personal favorite recurring supporting character, features in a lot of them. This is when it gets really good, and in later seasons, really gets dark, and at times, really, really fucking dark. Far more so than other Star Trek series. That's when Sisko really starts to shine. I rank him over Kirk for a reason.

Are you talking about Kai Winn?

This one.

My very limited recollection is that she was always mopin' about something.

S1's Duet centered around Kira and a Cardassian is one of the best episodes in all of Star Trek.

On the whole, the earlier DS9 seasons are worse than the later ones but you need to watch a lot of the early ones to gain context for what comes later (and there's plenty of very good stuff from S2 on). This is a decent watch guide: https://medium.com/maxistentialism-b...s-10acde591fd2

Major Kira Nerys

I can see how she comes off that way... especially in the first episode. Perhaps some context will soften you up on her a bit.

She is a freedom fighter that has been fighting against the Cardassian Occupation her entire life. Bajor finally ousts the Cardassians but instead of a coming together in a unified effort to re-build Bajor:

* there is a bunch of in-fighting in the "provisional" government
* they invite another "super power" into Bajor after having just ousted another
* instead of being a respected shot caller in the Bajoran Militia... she is now rank and file military
* she has been assigned to live on a tacky Cardassian fascist eyesore (LD reference).
* not only is she living on a former slave space station... she isn't even in command and will report to someone from Starfleet

She warms up dramatically once she learns that Sisko and Co. are there to help and not conquer.

Kira actually ends up being a pretty interesting character. And mirror universe Kira is absolutely amazing.

Winn, OTOH, annoyed the shit out of me. Of course, that was the point of her character, and she was expertly portrayed by Louise Fletcher, but it just worked too well. Nothing worse than a power mad asshole who cloaks everything in religion to make it all okay. Hate them in real life, hate them on TV. Had she been greased after a single episode, it would have been great. But sadly she was a recurring character in a very long story arc that I didn't like.
