OP UPDATE:

Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy!

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. Could freeze a linebacker to open up a short receiver too.

Well, not to nitpick because he is worth every penny. But if I知 not mistaken all mahomes did was backload his contract. He still makes the same amount of money, it値l just hit later in the contract. But glad we could do this while the iron is hot

Yeah, they are just pushing the due date for that money down the road. It's guaranteed so no way Mahomes would lose that money, so why not move it to help the team.

Backloading the cap hit, but not the cash flow. He gets the cash quicker when they do the restructuring move. If you池e the player, the only reason to refuse a restructure is if you want the team to feel the squeeze on your cap hit.

If the salary cap goes up more than "expected," the additional money pushed down the road won't hurt much either. The history of the salary cap seem to indicate that the rise in the cap has been accelerating, so a good GM should take advantage. The only real risk is getting too far ahead of that curve like what Buffalo did. They're paying a price right now, but they'll be over it pretty quickly.

Buffalo should do a new contract with Josh Allen. His cash flow is very low but his cap hits are very large in 2025 and 2026. He’s underpaid compared to a lot of other QB’s in the league. A new deal would help lower his cap hits in the next few years while putting more cash into his pocket.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Mahomes. His cap hits will average $66.5 million per year from 2025 through 2027. His cash flow will average $53.2 million per year for those 3 seasons. Definitely getting into the territory where both the team and player should want a new contract.
