Nzoner's Game Room>Hook & Ladder(al) ???

I'm contemplating that I've been wrong for many years, but I always learned of the Football play as "Hook and Lateral", because you ran a Hook pattern, and then lateralled the ball as soon as you caught it.

Why then, does everyone now days calls it "Hook & Ladder"? Where is the ladder? I'm cornfused, please end this madness!

It's both; that's why the name stuck. The play involves a "hook" and lateral. Old fire engines/equipment were called hook and ladders.

It's like "French Benefits" or using the word literally when it doesn't need to be used at all. People are just...misinformed.
