We always like to talk about all the great moves Veach has made bringing guys in, but some of his best work has been the deals he didn't make.

This one will go right into the top 5.

Wanna know why getting the QB right in the draft is so important?

Mahomes and Lattimore came from the same draft class.

Mahomes is just entering his prime. Lattimore is washed up.

That's why any team that isn't trying to build around its QB is just doing it wrong. The problem with building a roster around a game manager is that the game manager is your throughput -- the rest of that roster is going to churn virtually every single year. At best you'll get a 2-3 year window before those guys start to get too expensive or fall off.

Obviously QBs are more important than ever because of the rules around the passing game, but we sometimes forget that what's REALLY important is the longevity. You get that position right and you don't have to worry about it again for 15 fucking years.

SF was, in my opinion, the longest a window can be without a true elite QB, and that was because the NFC has been relatively weak at the position during that same time frame IMO. And they still didn't close the deal.

Genuinely curious how many “hired guns” at QB have won a Super Bowl vs QBs drafted by their team.

Short list since 1990
Mark Rypen (Washington)
Trent Dilfer (Ravens)
Kurt Warner (Rams)
Brad Johnson (TB)
Drew Brees (Saints)
Payton Manning (Broncos)
Matthew Stafford (Rams)

Add Elway and Farve since they were technically drafted by another team but traded away

I know what you're saying but I wouldn't include Warner on that list. Also, the Ravens and Bucs won in spite of their QBs.

He was an UDFA signed by the Packers and then cut and played for the Iowa Barnstormers before being signed by the Rams. I also forgot TB12 for Tampa.

I was just looking at the past 34 years. I think it’s pretty telling only 7 QBs not drafted by their team (excluding Elway and Favre) have won a Super Bowl.

*Edit* and Eli Manning since he was drafted by the chargers and promptly traded to the Giants.

Same with the Broncos. That SB they won with Manning was because of the defense. He was awful that year and even got benched against KC.

The point is that winning a SB with anyone other than a drafted QB is rare air.

You aren't wrong but if you're drafting in this years draft and your choice is Sheddeur Sanders or Will Johnson is on the board I'm taking Johnson. So you're right but I do think there's a caveat here
