KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The world’s first barbeque museum is coming to Kansas City next year!
The Museum of BBQ, the world’s first museum focused on all things barbecue, will open at Crown Center in Kansas City in the spring of 2025.
According to a news release, the museum experience will feature rooms dedicated to the elements and regions of barbecue, alongside a gift shop with rubs, sauces, and BBQ-themed goods.
“Barbecue is a feast for your senses,” the founder, Jonathan Bender said.
“Here in one of the BBQ capitals of the world, we’re creating a place where you can immerse yourself in the stories of barbecue.”
Museumgoers will get to follow two storytelling trails through the exhibits. They’ll first learn about the elements of barbecue to see how a pitmaster turns their favorite cut of meat into something delicious.
Then, they’ll travel through the main American regions of barbecue, the Carolinas, Memphis,
Texas, and Kansas City, to discover how each place has developed its own flavor.
“Kansas City is a natural home for the Museum of BBQ,” Bender said.
“Barbecue is synonymous with the city because of the rich traditions here and we’re proud to bring the world’s first museum dedicated to barbecue to KC.”
The museum will be located on the second floor of the Crown Center shops.
From an academic perspective, I'd like to learn more about the role of barbecue in westward expansion and perceptions of Manifest Destiny. Were settlers lured to the west by rumors of barbecue along the Missouri River? Did barbecue play a pivotal role in winning the Indian Wars? Did Texas secede from Mexico over cultural clashes with barbecue enchiladas? This is all interesting stuff. [Reply]
Build the David glass cathedral in East village, throw the bbq museum in there and turn Truman road into the next locally owned retail and dining neighborhood. KC pride. KC history. [Reply]
