I think the Chiefs have always earmarked either 2026 or 2027, just prior to the new season starting, to be the time when they give Mahomes a massive new extension that likely draws his total years under contract back out to 10 years again (maintaining salary cap flexibility).

This! Mortgage however many years you need to if it keeps us in good salary cap situations during mahomes prime years.
