Nzoner's Game Room>Question about the rules on a blocked kick
Demonpenz 09:47 PM Yesterday
Should we got away from the ball after we blocked it. Seemed like we could have had a Leon lett situation. Good win and flame away

No flame here. Your question is legit.

To the best of my knowledge, any Offensive player can pick up a blocked FG and advance it if the blocked kick doesn't go beyond the line of scrimmage

So the Chiefs defenders did the right thing going after the ball, if it wasn't beyond the line of scrimmage.

Always a possibility, so the Chiefs defender that grabbed it & stepped out of bounds, did the right thing --- GAME OVER !!

No, the ball is live if it's behind the Los.

Blocked kicks are rare enough that I can never remember exactly how the rules work. When it squirted out of Josh Williams' grip, I was worried that some loser bronco might be able to pick it up and run for a touchdown. I was happy to see Hicks pick it up and put it to bed.

I was wondering about a player that was out of bounds coming back in bounds and being the first to touch the ball. Is that a penalty?

If the blocked kick goes beyond the LOS, the only way the kicking team can recover the ball is if the defense touched it first, other than the initial touching on the block.

If it goes beyond the LOS after the block, players are told to stay away.

That's why the Leon Lett situation was so bad. All he had to do was literally nothing.

That is one of the crazy rules in football.
I think it was the same in college---which led to this amazing stand by Iowa.

Probably not. The rule is only if you intentionally went out of bounds without contact. I don't think in a mad scramble for the ball you would be deemed to have intentionally gone out of bounds. I guess there is technically some far off hypothetical situation where you could be flagged but honestly once a fumble happens everyone is going to be focused on that and not seeing who may have stepped out and was it intentional or not.

Didn't matter, because he would no longer be considered on the "defense" so the game is over and no untimed play after a penalty on the Defense at the end of regulation.
